Roblox beginner's guide: how to get started

Roblox isn't one game. It's millions of them, all made by other players. Here's how to set up your account, find something fun and avoid the common mistakes in your first week.

Blocky stepping stones leading across the sky

Your first 10 minutes

  1. Create your account. Use your real birthday, because it affects what you can play.
  2. Turn on two-step verification in your settings.
  3. Do the age check if you want to chat. See how chat works.
  4. Pick a free outfit, or make one here.
  5. Try a game from our game picker.

Finding games worth playing

  • Use our game picker to get three ideas that suit your mood.
  • Look at what's trending, with player numbers.
  • Check the content label before you play. It tells you what to expect.
  • If a game asks you to pay early, leave it and try another.

Robux: don't rush

Robux is the platform's currency. You don't need it to play most games, so play for a while before spending. When you do spend, start with one thing you really want. Use our calculator if you're curious what Robux is worth to creators, and never trust a site offering it for free. Here's why.

Looking good for free

  • Search the Marketplace for free items. See our guide.
  • Download a free outfit from our catalogue.
  • Try a free face.
  • Uploading your own clothes needs Robux, so check the clothes guide.

Five habits that keep you safe

  • Never share your password or your two-step code.
  • Ignore anyone offering free Robux.
  • Keep chats in Roblox, not on outside apps with strangers.
  • Block and report anyone who makes you uncomfortable.
  • Tell a parent or adult you trust if something feels wrong.

Is there a catch?

Not really. Roblox is free to download and most games are free to join, but many are designed to sell you extras. Decide your budget before you start, and you'll enjoy it more.

Learning the controls

Each game can change the controls a little, but the basics stay the same. On a computer, you move with WASD and jump with the spacebar. On a phone, you use on-screen controls. Try a simple obstacle course first to get used to moving and jumping.
