What is Roblox? A plain-English guide for players and parents

Roblox is not one game. It is a platform where millions of games, which Roblox calls experiences, are made by players and studios and played for free.

The short answer

Roblox is an online platform where you can play games made by other people and make your own. It is free to download and free to play. Most games are free to join too, but many sell extras with Robux, the platform's own currency.

Is Roblox free?

Yes: making an account, downloading Roblox and joining most games costs nothing. Money comes in when you buy Robux to spend on avatar items or things inside games, or subscribe to Roblox Plus. Parents can set spending limits in parental controls.

What are Roblox games?

Every game on Roblox is built in Roblox Studio, a free creation tool. Some are made by one person, some by large teams. Popular games come and go fast, which is why searches for a single game can rise by hundreds of percent in a week.

  • Games run on Roblox's servers, so you join them from the Roblox app rather than installing each one.
  • Each game has a content maturity label, and parents can choose which labels their child can join.

When did Roblox come out?

Roblox was created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, who started developing it in 2004. It was released to the public on 1 September 2006, on Windows. It reached iPhone and iPad in 2012, Android in 2014, Xbox One in 2015, Meta Quest and PlayStation 4 in 2023, and PlayStation 5 in April 2026.
