Why can't I chat on Roblox? Age checks explained
If chat has vanished on your Roblox account, it probably isn't broken. Since January 2026, everyone needs an age check to chat, and your age now decides who you can talk to.
The short answer
You can still play without an age check, but chat stays off. Complete the check in the app and chat opens up according to your age. If you're under 9, a parent also has to give consent.
How the age check works

Who can you chat with?
By default, you chat with your own age group and the groups just above and below it. That means children under 16 can't chat with adults that way. Roblox notes that groups can vary by region and product.

If you haven't done a check, Roblox uses your sign-up birthday. Under 9 goes into Kids and 9 or older into Select, with chat off in both.
What are Trusted Friends?
Trusted Friends are people you know and trust. Adding one can unlock chat beyond your age group, such as Party voice. Both people must agree, and a 13 to 17 year old can only add an adult through real-life methods, such as scanning a QR code or importing contacts. Roblox says it still monitors these conversations for serious harm.
Did it get your age wrong?
- Over 13 on the account: verify your birthday with an ID, under Settings, then Account info.
- Under 13 on the account: change the birthday under Settings, then Account info.
- Under 18 after a face check: a linked parent can correct the birthday, but only once.
