How to make a Roblox game: a beginner's guide

You don't need experience to make a Roblox game. Studio is free, and you can have something playable in an afternoon. Here's the shortest path from nothing to a game your friends can try.

What you need

  • A Roblox account.
  • Roblox Studio, which is free. See how to install it.
  • A Windows PC or a Mac. Studio doesn't run on phones or tablets.
  • An idea small enough to finish.

Your first game, step by step

  1. Open Studio and choose a template.
  2. Move around the world, and try the tools for selecting and moving parts.
  3. Add your own parts, and change their colour and material.
  4. Press Play to test it.
  5. Change one thing at a time, and test again.
  6. Publish it, and share it with a friend.

Start with an obstacle course

An obby is a classic first project: a path of platforms that gets harder. You'll learn building, testing and level design without needing much code. Roblox's own lessons include a simple platformer built from a template.

Then learn to script

Roblox games are scripted in Luau. Start small, by making a part disappear when touched, or adding a door that opens. You don't need to learn it all first. Pick one thing you want to add, learn it, and repeat.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Starting with a giant open world.
  • Copying models you don't understand. Free models can contain unwanted scripts.
  • Skipping playtests with other people.
  • Waiting until it's perfect before showing anyone.

Can you make money?

Yes, some creators do, but most games earn little. Treat your first game as practice. Selling things in your game is an option later on, and rules can change, so check Roblox's creator documentation.

Make it fun before making it pretty

Use plain blocks until the game is fun to play. If it isn't fun with simple shapes, better art won't save it. Ask a friend to try it without any help, watch where they get stuck, and fix that first.

Where to learn next
