GTA 6 features: what Rockstar has actually shown

Rockstar has shown more of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) in the last few months than in the years before. These are the features that come from its own showcase and its interview with IGN, sorted by what changes how you play.

Two leads, one partnership

  • You can swap between Jason and Lucia, and your partner can take the wheel while you ride along.
  • In a chase, one can drive while you shoot from the passenger seat.
  • They text each other about everyday things, such as locking the house.
  • Your partner can suggest a nearby job or detour while you're already travelling.

Police and getting caught

  • Hollow wanted stars mean officers don't yet know what you look like.
  • Police can surround a shop or bank and wait for you, though some buildings have another way out.
  • If one of you escapes and the other is caught, the caught character still gets the Busted screen and respawns.

This is a big change from older games, because being seen matters. Watch whether your stars are hollow before you decide how to run.

Robberies and stealing cars

  • Blowing a safe is fast but can damage what's inside. Finding the combination is slower and keeps more of the loot.
  • Damage lowers what a stolen car sells for.
  • Vehicle fences can point you to cars and give you things like impound lot access codes.
  • Some vehicles have trackers that alert police if you drive too slowly.

A world that notices you

  • People can confront you if you follow them or listen in for too long.
  • Some civilians are armed and may start trouble themselves.
  • Overheard conversations can lead to something to do.
  • Aiming at someone can be enough to make them run.

Everyday life

  • Safehouses have routines and visitors, and you can shave or trim at home.
  • Your vehicle's trunk holds spare outfits and weapons.
  • Your phone appears in your character's hand rather than as an overlay.
  • You can study wildlife for a checklist, and pet or scold dogs.

What we're treating with caution

Some details come from a pre-order listing rather than Rockstar, and TechRadar says it's unclear who wrote them. Read our confirmed vs rumours guide before you trust a feature list, especially one that gives exact limits.

Will it feel like Red Dead Redemption 2?

In some ways, yes. Several features echo Rockstar's last game, such as studying animals, characters coming and going around home, and more everyday detail. That's good news if you loved that world, though it may also mean a slower pace at times. Rockstar says main missions and open-world activities are more closely linked than before.
