GTA 6 tips: how to get ready and what to do first

Nobody outside Rockstar has a true Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) walkthrough yet, so be wary of anyone who says they do. These tips come from what Rockstar has shown and from long-standing series habits.

Before launch

  1. Check your storage. You may need up to 212 GB.
  2. Turn on automatic downloads so that pre-load starts by itself.
  3. Mute spoiler terms on social media. Leaks will spread quickly.
  4. If you skipped it, try Red Dead Redemption 2's slower pace. Rockstar keeps comparing GTA 6's systems to it.

Your first hours

  • Don't rush the story. Rockstar says it has blurred the line between open-world activities and missions, so wandering isn't wasted time.
  • Try both leads early. They have different backgrounds, and you'll use both.
  • Listen to people. Overheard conversations can lead to activities.
  • Look after stolen cars. Damage lowers what they sell for.
  • Use your trunk. It holds spare outfits and weapons.

Staying out of trouble

  • Check whether your wanted stars are hollow. If they are, officers don't know what you look like.
  • Aiming at someone may end a fight without firing a shot.
  • Before a robbery, think about your exit. Police can wait outside, and some buildings have a second way out.

Save your game

Keep a manual save as well as your autosave, especially as Rockstar says small decisions can have lasting effects and the story is designed for replays.

What not to trust yet

Exact weapon limits, mission lists and money methods need people to play the game first. We'll update this guide after launch with what's actually true.

Sort out your settings first

  • Check your aiming and camera settings in the first hour. They shape how the whole game feels.
  • Try the subtitles, as a lot of story comes through radio and ambient chat.
  • Turn on your console's performance mode if you're offered one, and see which you prefer.

Spending your money

In most Rockstar games, early money feels scarce and later money piles up. Buy what keeps you alive first, such as armour and ammo, and hold off on luxuries. Keep a car you like, and store outfits in your trunk so that you can change quickly after a job.

Spoilers: how to avoid them

  1. Mute words like the game's name and the leads' names on social media.
  2. Turn off autoplay on video sites.
  3. Leave group chats quiet for a week if your friends play faster than you.

What's different if you're new to GTA?

You don't need any history with the series. If it's your first GTA, expect a game that lets you do lots of things that aren't missions. It's fine to take your time, and it's fine to use a guide. This site will keep adding them after launch.
