Does GTA 6 have online? What's actually known

Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is launching as a single-player experience. Rockstar hasn't announced what a new online mode will look like or when it will arrive.

What's confirmed

  • Rockstar says the GTA 6 on sale now is a single-player experience.
  • Take-Two's CEO says it expects to keep supporting the current GTA Online.
  • Copies reportedly include a month of GTA+.

What isn't confirmed

  • A launch date for any online mode.
  • Whether your GTA Online character or money will carry over.
  • Whether it will be a separate purchase.

Will GTA Online shut down?

Nothing suggests it will close when GTA 6 launches. Take-Two says the update pace hasn't changed, so you can keep playing. Read what happens to GTA Online for more.

Should you keep playing GTA Online now?

Yes, if you're enjoying it. Just don't buy Shark Cards on the assumption that your money will carry over, because nobody has said it will.

How GTA 5 did it

This gives us a useful clue, though it isn't a promise. GTA 5 launched in September 2013, and GTA Online followed about two weeks later as a separate mode. GTA 6 has a very different level of expectation around it, so it's anyone's guess how Rockstar will handle it.

What should current GTA Online players do?

  • Enjoy the game you've got. Your time there isn't wasted.
  • Avoid big real-money purchases based on a rumour.
  • Keep an eye on Rockstar Newswire, which is where any real news will appear first.

What is GTA+?

GTA+ is Rockstar's membership. It offers bonuses for GTA Online and access to some of Rockstar's classic games. Reports say GTA 6 copies come with a month of it, although they've differed on whether that applies on every platform.

Will you need to pay for it?

We don't know. GTA Online has always come free with GTA 5, and it makes its money through Shark Cards and GTA+. It's reasonable to expect something similar, but it's only an expectation. Rockstar hasn't said how a future online mode will be sold, whether it will need a separate download, or whether it'll need GTA+.

Where will the news come from?

Rockstar Newswire is the place to watch. Take-Two's quarterly earnings calls are the next best source, as its CEO often gets asked about this. Anything else is second-hand, so ask where it came from. We'll update this guide as soon as there's real news.
