What happens to GTA Online after GTA 6?

Grand Theft Auto Online isn't closing when GTA 6 launches. Take-Two says it expects to keep supporting it, though Rockstar hasn't said what comes next.

What's been said

  • Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, says update pace "has been pretty stable" and that it expects to keep supporting the game.
  • Rockstar says GTA 6 is a single-player experience at launch.
  • Bloomberg's Jason Schreier says Rockstar isn't planning to talk about a new GTA Online soon.

What should you do?

  • Keep playing if you're enjoying it.
  • Don't buy GTA$ on the hope that it'll transfer. Nothing says it will.
  • Spend your in-game money on things you'll use now.

Do you need GTA+?

GTA 6 copies reportedly come with a month of GTA+, which includes GTA Online bonuses and access to some classic games. Check what's included on your platform.

Will your character carry over?

Nobody's said. Some reports assume a new version of GTA Online will arrive, but Rockstar hasn't announced how it'd work. Until it does, treat any claims about transferring your character, cars or money as guesswork.

Why would Rockstar keep it going?

GTA Online has been a huge business for over a decade, and millions still play it. Take-Two says it doesn't plan to change how it's updated. It would be odd to switch that off before there's something to replace it.

Which version should you be on?

If you're on PC, Enhanced is the better long-term choice. See Enhanced vs Legacy. If you're starting today, our beginner's guide will get you going.

Could servers close on older consoles?

Rockstar has closed older versions of GTA Online before, including on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2021. If you're on PS4 or Xbox One, it's worth thinking about moving up. There's no announced date for that, though.

Will the player count drop?

Probably, at least for a while, as many players try GTA 6. If you play in Invite Only sessions, you won't notice much. Bigger jobs may take longer to fill, so it's worth building a friends list or a crew now.

Is it still worth starting now?

Yes. GTA Online is easier to start than it has ever been, and there's still plenty of content. Just treat it as a game to enjoy today, not an investment in the next one.
