GTA 5 Enhanced vs Legacy: which PC version should you play?
Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) on PC now comes in two versions. For most players, Enhanced is the one to use, but Legacy still matters if you've got an older PC or use older mods.

The differences
| Enhanced | Legacy | |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics | Ray tracing options, DLSS 3 and FSR3 | Original look |
| Loading | Faster | Slower |
| Career Builder in GTA Online | Yes | No |
| GTA+ | Yes | No |
Is it free?
If you already own GTA 5 on PC, the upgrade is free. New buyers get both, and they sit side by side in your library.
Can I play GTA Online with friends on the other version?
No. There's no GTA Online crossplay between Enhanced and Legacy, so you and your friends need to be on the same one.
Which should you pick?
- Enhanced: if your PC can run it, and you're starting fresh in GTA Online.
- Legacy: if your PC is older, or you've got a single-player mod setup that you don't want to move.
Moving your saves
Moving saves between versions is possible, but check Rockstar Support for the current steps before you start. Back up your files first.
What will your PC need?
Enhanced is more demanding, especially with ray tracing turned on. Start with the default settings, then try the options one at a time. DLSS or FSR can bring back a lot of performance if your frame rate drops.
What about mods?
Single-player mods made for Legacy may not work on Enhanced. If you've got a mod setup that you love, keep Legacy for that and try Enhanced separately. Remember that mods are for Story Mode only: see what Rockstar allows.
What about console players?
PS5 and Xbox Series players already have an enhanced version of the game. The choice only applies if you're on PC.
Which is right for GTA Online?
If you're starting a new character, choose Enhanced, as it gets the Career Builder and its GTA$4,000,000 grant. If all of your friends are on Legacy, you'll need to join them there, or get them to move over.
Is Enhanced worth trying?
If you own the game on PC, it's free, so there's little to lose. PC Gamer's view was that the upgrade looks better but adds little beyond that, so don't expect a new game. It's a nice way to play again before GTA 6, particularly in Story Mode, where ray traced lighting really suits Los Santos at sunset.
