GTA Online beginner's guide 2026: how to start right

Starting Grand Theft Auto Online today is far easier than it used to be, provided you make one good choice on day one. Here's the path we'd follow, based on current 2026 guides.

Choose your version first

On PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced, new characters get the Career Builder and a GTA$4,000,000 grant. On PS4, Xbox One and PC Legacy you start from zero, so choose a newer version if you can.

The Career Builder

This runs only once. You must spend at least GTA$3,000,000 on a property, a vehicle and a weapon, and you can keep up to GTA$1,000,000.

Not sure? Gunrunner is the safest solo pick.

Your first session

  1. Start an Invite Only session from the pause menu, so griefers can't interfere.
  2. Do the jobs and calls the game gives you.
  3. Buy a cheap garage if you didn't get one.
  4. Save GTA$50,000 in the bank so you can register as a VIP.

What to buy, and what to skip

  • Buy: the Armored Kuruma, once you've done the Fleeca Job. It protects you in missions.
  • Buy: the Acid Lab route early.
  • Skip: supercars and fancy apartments, for now.
  • Skip: the old Starter Pack, which the Career Builder has largely replaced.

Next step

When you're set up, follow the first million guide.

Prices are base figures from August 2026 and change often, so check the game.

Staying safe

  • Use Invite Only sessions while you learn. You keep most of your progress and avoid griefers.
  • Don't carry much cash. Deposit it using your phone's Internet menu.
  • Don't give your login to anyone offering free money. Those offers are scams.
  • Don't use mod menus. See why they're a bad idea.

Registering as a VIP

You'll need GTA$50,000 in the bank. It isn't spent, only checked, and it opens up VIP work that's a useful early earner. It's one of the first small goals to aim for.

What rank actually does

Rank matters less than old guides claim. It mainly unlocks weapons at Ammu-Nation. For example, the Micro SMG arrives at rank 5, and the SMG at rank 11. Classic heists need rank 12 and a high-end apartment.
