How to play Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe is tiny enough to understand in seconds and deep enough to punish one loose turn. The board is really about threats: make one, block one, and look for positions where a single move creates two winning lines at once.

Objective

Place three marks in a row before your opponent. If a win is not available, prevent theirs and steer the board toward a position that leaves you multiple threats.

Controls

  • Choose an empty square to place your mark.
  • Play against the machine or use the available local-player mode when offered.
  • Restart immediately after a finished board to test a different opening.

Strategy tips

  • Check for an immediate win before doing anything else, then check for an immediate block.
  • The centre touches more winning lines than any edge square and is usually strategically valuable.
  • Corners create stronger fork opportunities than edges when the board is open.
