Phoenix Cyclops joins MARVEL Tōkon on November 2 as its first Year 1 DLC fighter

Phoenix Cyclops arrives in MARVEL Tōkon on November 2 as the first Year 1 DLC fighter, using Solar Shards to unlock a risky Dark Phoenix transformation.

Phoenix Cyclops will join MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2, becoming the first post-launch fighter included in the game's Year 1 Pass.

Arc System Works revealed the date and a fuller breakdown of the character on October 7. The studio is positioning this version of Scott Summers around familiar Optic Blasts plus the much less familiar problem of managing Phoenix Force power without letting it consume the whole match.

Solar Shards turn zoning into a transformation resource

Phoenix Cyclops is designed as an all-rounder with long-range Optic Blasts, close-range attacks, throws and wider fire-based tools. Arc System Works says repeated use of Optic Blasts builds Solar Shards, a Phoenix Force resource tied to his transformation mechanic.

Collect four Solar Shards and Cyclops can enter Dark Phoenix form. The transformed state provides a temporary power increase, but it also drains health, so the mechanic is framed as a trade-off rather than a free super mode.

The studio says its design takes inspiration from the *Avengers vs. X-Men* storyline and the Phoenix Five. That comic connection explains why this is not the standard Cyclops silhouette many fighting-game players might expect.

Arc System Works says Cyclops was considered earlier in development, but the team kept working on the character because it wanted a version that felt different from his established fighting-game appearances. Phoenix Force became the route to a more unusual visual identity and a resource mechanic with an obvious risk attached.

That development explanation is useful context, not balance evidence. Until players spend time with the final DLC build, there is no sensible basis for declaring the transformation too strong, too weak or tournament-defining.

Arc System Works also plans two alternate looks on November 2: Classic and Legacy DLC costumes. The developer says those costumes are intended to give players more familiar interpretations of Cyclops alongside the Phoenix-based default design.

You can sample the game before the DLC arrives

A three-hour PlayStation Plus Game Trial for *MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls* began on October 7. That trial covers the existing game, not early home access to Phoenix Cyclops, but it gives subscribers a limited way to see how the base roster and team-fighting systems work before deciding whether the DLC matters to them.

The first public chance to play Phoenix Cyclops himself comes sooner than November. Arc System Works says he will be playable at the game's booth during EVO France from October 9-11.

That is a preview opportunity for people at the event, not evidence about final balance. The character still has to make it through the usual post-release reality of players finding routes, matchups and probably at least one setup nobody expected.

The October 7 post also explains why the studio chose Phoenix Cyclops instead of a more conventional version. Producer Takeshi Yamanaka says the team wanted to add something different to Cyclops' established fighting-game history, using the Phoenix interpretation to change both his look and the risk-reward structure of his moveset.

For now, the confirmed sequence is straightforward: trial for the base game now, an in-person Phoenix Cyclops preview at EVO France, then the first Year 1 DLC fighter arrives on November 2 with his two additional costumes.
