Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's first multiplayer beta weekend is now live for players with early access. The opening window runs from August 21 through August 25 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, giving pre-order customers the first public chance to get into Infinity Ward's new multiplayer before launch.

Everyone else gets a second window soon. Activision says the open beta runs from August 28 through September 1 and will include Nintendo Switch 2 alongside Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. Modern Warfare 4 itself is due on October 23, so these weekends are a genuine pre-release test rather than a launch-week demo dressed up as one.

What the first weekend is testing

Xbox Wire's August 21 look at multiplayer puts a lot of emphasis on movement and map readability. Infinity Ward is using a South Korean-inspired setting for several environments, with maps including Silkworm and Lotus helping establish the visual language for the wider multiplayer package.

The more useful detail is how the studio is trying to make movement faster without simply turning every soldier into a rocket. Developers told Xbox Wire that some maps use less cover so players have fewer angles to check as they move through a space. New traversal options include pipe climbs, routes that let players slide under obstacles, and a mantle slide designed to preserve momentum while keeping the weapon ready.

That makes the beta important for more than server load. Movement systems often sound elegant in a feature list and feel completely different once thousands of players begin finding the fastest routes, awkward sightlines and unexpected combinations. Activision is explicitly positioning the beta as a way to gather feedback before day one.

The first weekend is restricted to people who pre-ordered or pre-purchased eligible editions on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 or PC. Activision's beta page says retail customers may need a 13-character early-access code, while digital pre-orders through the major platform stores are validated automatically.

The open beta is the bigger test

The second weekend removes the purchase requirement. From August 28 to September 1, Activision says all players on supported platforms can participate, including Nintendo Switch 2 owners. That should make it the more representative test of how Modern Warfare 4 behaves across its full launch-platform mix.

The beta includes core multiplayer maps and modes, and Activision has already highlighted a spread that reaches beyond standard six-versus-six matches. The company is also using the period to expose players to its new mobility course and Kill Block mode, while the Xbox Wire material shows the maps are being built around those new traversal tools.

For anyone deciding whether to pre-order purely to play early, the calendar is the important bit: paid early access buys roughly a week of advance testing, not exclusive access to the beta altogether. The open weekend arrives on August 28 with no pre-order required.

There is still plenty the beta cannot settle, including campaign quality, long-term balance and how the launch build changes after feedback. What it can do is give players an early read on the part of Modern Warfare 4 that Infinity Ward is currently talking about most: whether its new maps, sightlines and movement systems actually make multiplayer flow better in real matches.
