007 First Light gets path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction in a new PC update

The September 15 PC update adds path tracing and DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction, with NVIDIA positioning the mode as a higher-end lighting option.

007 First Light's PC version now has path tracing and DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction. NVIDIA says the September 15 update adds more detailed lighting, shadows and reflections, while IO Interactive's earlier announcement confirms the feature was developed as a post-launch visual upgrade.

That is the useful headline. The important caveat is performance: path tracing is a substantially heavier rendering mode than the game's existing setup, so this is not a free image-quality switch for every PC.

NVIDIA's claims about better fidelity come from NVIDIA. Xarmo has not benchmarked the patch, and players should treat performance expectations as hardware- and settings-dependent rather than universal.

What the update actually adds

Path tracing expands how the game calculates light transport across a scene, allowing more of the lighting, shadowing and reflection work to be handled through traced rays instead of a smaller set of ray-traced effects and traditional rendering shortcuts.

DLSS Ray Reconstruction sits alongside that workload. NVIDIA describes it as an AI-based replacement for traditional denoisers used with ray tracing and path tracing, with the goal of reconstructing a cleaner image from the limited ray samples a GPU can afford to calculate in real time.

007 First Light already supported DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation before this patch. The September 15 change adds path tracing and Ray Reconstruction on top of those existing options; it is not the game's first DLSS update.

NVIDIA released a Game Ready driver on September 9 specifically listing support for the 007 First Light path-tracing upgrade. If the new option does not appear or behaves unexpectedly, updating the game and graphics driver is the first sensible check before changing a pile of unrelated settings.

Better lighting comes with a real GPU cost

Path tracing is the most demanding visual mode in the package. NVIDIA's own Game Ready messaging treats the September upgrade as an additional high-end rendering feature rather than the baseline way the game must be played. That is enough reason to expect a trade-off without inventing one universal frame-rate number for every GeForce card.

The practical approach is to compare it against the existing ray-traced presentation on your own target resolution. If path tracing pushes performance below a level you find comfortable, Super Resolution, a lower output resolution or a return to the previous rendering mode may be a better trade than forcing the new option simply because it is newer.

NVIDIA's update says the new mode is designed to improve detail in lighting, shadows and reflections. IO Interactive also announced the September 15 timing before launch day, so the feature is part of a planned graphics roadmap rather than an unannounced hotfix.

What the sources do not establish is one "best" configuration for every RTX GPU. That depends on resolution, image-quality preferences, frame-generation settings and the performance target a player is willing to accept.

For PC players with enough GPU headroom, the update adds a more ambitious lighting option to an already DLSS-heavy release. For everyone else, the useful news is that the existing rendering path has not suddenly become obsolete. Path tracing is another choice in the graphics menu—and a demanding one—not a requirement to keep playing 007 First Light.
