Apple has given its stores instructions for dealing with cracked inner displays on the iPhone Duo, according to MacRumors. The outlet reports that Apple shared a memo this week with Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, which MacRumors later obtained. We couldn't check the memo directly or find a second outlet that has seen it, so what it says comes from MacRumors' reporting.
Apple's earlier public statement was provided to TechRadar and MacRumors, and to Bloomberg according to TechCrunch. Owner reports and replacement advice below come from 9to5Mac.
What the memo reportedly says
If a customer reports the problem, Apple advised technicians to inspect the iPhone Duo and repair or replace it under their standard procedures, MacRumors reports. The memo also said the issue affects a small number of iPhone Duo units, according to the outlet.
MacRumors reports that Apple said most iPhone Duo units are not susceptible to the issue, and that affected units appear to show the defect rather quickly after use. The outlet also reports that Apple said there is no iPhone Duo recall, and that Apple has not launched a public-facing repair program on its website for the issue.
MacRumors' own reading is that the instructions are straightforward, but that an internal memo suggests the issue is widespread enough to need official guidance. That is the outlet's interpretation; Apple has not given a figure for how many units are affected.
What Apple has said publicly
Apple acknowledged the problem on Monday, October 26. In a statement provided to TechRadar, Apple said: "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement." The same statement opened by saying the response to iPhone Duo from early users has been "incredibly positive".
TechCrunch reported the same day that Apple had told Bloomberg it was "aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units."
What owners are reporting
The reports began soon after the phone reached buyers. According to 9to5Mac, a handful of users reported over the weekend before Apple's statement that the inner display had cracked along the hinge, with some of those reports posted on Reddit. 9to5Mac also noted that a handful of the reports circulating were fake, AI-generated posts.
TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg, reported complaints of screens cracking "after just hours or days of use", and said some users described a loud crunching noise before a crack appeared.
On the cause, MacRumors reports that iFixit's teardown found the issue is likely related to a defective hinge on affected units, while Apple has yet to comment on the underlying cause. TechRadar noted that YouTuber CuriousHagi was able to recreate the damage, but only by deliberately bending the phone backwards as part of a durability test.
What to do if your iPhone Duo is affected
Apple's advice is to contact AppleCare for a replacement. 9to5Mac reports that you do not need AppleCare+ to get the phone replaced for this problem, and that anyone who bought through a carrier should contact AppleCare directly rather than the carrier. MacRumors points to Apple's support website and, in the US and Canada, 1-800-APL-CARE.
Mia's take: The memo matters more for what it changes at the counter than for what it admits. Apple's public line hasn't moved: a small number of units, no recall, no repair program. But if store and service staff now have written instructions to repair or replace, owners with a cracked inner screen can at least hope for a more predictable process from one store to the next. If yours shows lines down the middle, don't wait to see whether it gets worse. Go to AppleCare, not your carrier, and keep a photo of the damage.
