Fire Emblem Shadows adds Book IV chapters and Flame Lords in a free update

Nintendo's free mobile update opens Book IV from both viewpoints and adds a limited-time Fortune's Weave celebration.

Fire Emblem Shadows has opened a fresh chapter in its two-sided mobile story. A free update announced by Nintendo on October 9 adds the opening two chapters of Book IV, *An Island Apart*, for players following either the light or shadow perspective. It also brings a small set of rewards tied to the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave celebration. There are two separate things to understand here: how to reach the new story, and which rewards have a deadline.

The update concerns Fire Emblem Shadows, Nintendo's existing free-to-start game for smartphones. It does not mean the new chapters are arriving as a stand-alone Nintendo Switch 2 release. That distinction matters because the celebration includes references to another Fire Emblem game, while the actual story chapters and their unlock requirements belong to Shadows.

Getting to Book IV

Book IV begins with Chapters 1 and 2 on both the light and shadow routes. Nintendo's story description returns to Kurt and the group from Book I, who find refuge in Rose's homeland of Holtz after escaping danger. Their pause among the islands is brief: the pursuing empire is still part of the setup. There is no need to invent later chapter twists to explain what the update offers today.

Access also takes some preparation. Nintendo says players unlock the new chapters by collecting Story Fragments, which are earned as rewards from battles. Before moving into a different book, players must collect all of Book I's story rewards. The menu path Nintendo identifies is Change Stories from the home screen. In other words, seeing a new chapter announced does not guarantee it immediately appears on every account.

That requirement fits the structure of Shadows. Its battles combine real-time strategy with social deduction: one member of a three-person party may be betraying the others. The title tells its conflict from two viewpoints, so each book's light and shadow chapters are part of the same larger investigation rather than two separate products.

For a returning player, the useful sequence is to finish any outstanding Book I reward collection, gather fragments through play, and then check Change Stories. For someone just installing the game, the free update is a reason to explore the original story first, not a promise that Book IV can be skipped to on day one.

Rewards and dates worth separating

The other October addition is a Fortune's Weave crossover celebration. Nintendo says logging into Shadows on three separate days earns a total of 12 Souls connected with recruiting Leda: String Siren. Three separate logins are the operative detail; a single extended play session is not described as satisfying that requirement.

Dietrich is offered through the Premium Pass component of the Season Pass, available through October 27 at 10:59 p.m. Pacific Time. That is not the same as a free login reward. Readers should check the current in-game store and regional terms before spending.

Nintendo describes the core app as free to start, with optional in-game purchases, a compatible smartphone and persistent internet required. Its official site explains the light-versus-shadow premise and equipment progression, but does not change the update's timing or unlock rules.

For players deciding whether to return, the practical appeal is a new route for an established cast, plus clear reasons to check in across several days. The key limitation is equally clear: Book IV is gated by earlier story progress, and the free login bonus and paid Premium Pass are different offers. That is the distinction to keep in mind before jumping back into the battle queue.
