*Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve* is bringing back Annihilation Battle, with Bandai Namco using a newly revealed campaign mission to show how the mode has changed for the October 2 release.
The basic idea remains familiar: enter a large combat area, destroy as many valuable targets as possible within the time limit, and decide how to use the available time and weapons. The new Mission 7 example includes facilities such as a solar power plant, oil tanks, an air base and an ammunition dump.
Players are not being funnelled through a fixed target order. Bandai Namco says they can choose which enemies to attack, when to return to a supply line to reload weapons and how to plan a route through the battlefield. That freedom is the reason producer Manabu Shimomoto describes Annihilation Battle as a mode that reflects the series' emphasis on player judgment.
Chain destruction adds another reason to think about target order
The new element is environmental chain destruction. Bandai Namco says hitting a flammable object such as an oil tank can trigger explosions that destroy nearby structures. Buildings can also be damaged by enemy aircraft crashing into them after being shot down.
That turns some targets into more than individual score objects. If the final game behaves as described, the order and timing of attacks can affect how efficiently a player clears a cluster of structures.
The reveal is attached to the game's new story trailer, but the mechanical detail is the more useful part. Annihilation missions have traditionally been about prioritisation under a timer; chain destruction adds another variable to that existing loop instead of replacing it with a completely different mode.
The mission also includes return lines for resupply. Choosing when to leave the combat area briefly for more weapons creates the usual trade-off between remaining on target and having enough ammunition to keep scoring efficiently.
October 2 is still the full launch date
The new mode reveal does not change *Ace Combat 8*'s release timing. Bandai Namco and PlayStation continue to list the standard launch for October 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PlayStation Store lists earlier access for the Deluxe Edition before the standard release.
PlayStation's product page also describes a separate online mode with co-op and competitive play, but Annihilation Battle is being shown here as part of the campaign experience. It should not be confused with the multiplayer modes Bandai Namco detailed earlier in September.
The story trailer frames Mission 7 as a counterattack against Sotoan forces, with the campaign continuing the fictional Strangereal conflict around the Federation of Central Usea. Those story details provide the setting; the concrete gameplay news is the confirmed return of the mission type.
There is still plenty that the announcement does not quantify. Bandai Namco has not published a scoring table, target count or full mission duration for this Annihilation Battle, and the reveal does not establish how often the mode appears across the campaign.
What is confirmed is enough to define the returning structure: broad target choice, mid-mission resupply and new chain-reaction destruction. For a series built around turning a huge radar screen into a route-planning problem at jet speed, that is a pretty fitting way to bring Annihilation Battle back.
