GTA 5 endings explained: which one should you pick?

**Spoilers ahead.** At the end of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), Franklin faces a choice with three outcomes, and it decides who you can still play as afterwards. If you want the short answer, choose Ending C.

The three endings

EndingMissionWhat happens
ASomething SensibleFranklin kills Trevor
BThe Time's ComeFranklin kills Michael
CThe Third WayAll three work together

Why Ending C wins

  • All three characters stay playable, so you keep their side missions and money.
  • You can finish everything left in the game.
  • GTA Base describes it as the canon ending.

What about A and B?

Both cost you a character for good. They're worth seeing, so make a separate save before you choose, then reload to get the best one.

When does the choice come up?

It comes right after the final heist, The Big Score. Franklin gets calls from two people who want him to do something about Michael and Trevor. You then pick one of three options. There's no going back without a save, so make one first.

Ending A in more detail

Franklin takes on Trevor at the request of Steve Haines and Dave Norton. It ends the partnership, and you can no longer play as Trevor. His side content goes with him.

Ending B in more detail

Devin Weston asks Franklin to take out Michael. It's a sad end for the character at the heart of the story, and you can no longer play as him.

Ending C in more detail

Franklin refuses both jobs and goes to his friends instead. The three work together to deal with their enemies, in one of the game's best missions, called The Third Way. Afterwards, they all live on, and you can keep playing as any of them.

Does your ending affect money?

The most important thing for money is having all three characters left to invest with. That's another good reason to choose Ending C before you start Lester's stock missions.

Can you replay it?

Yes. You can replay missions from the pause menu, or use a save from before your choice. You don't need to start a new game.

Which ending is canon?

GTA Base calls Ending C canon, and most players treat it that way. It's also the only one where all three leads survive.
