GTA 5 Easter eggs and secrets worth finding

The Los Santos of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) is full of jokes, mysteries and nods to other games. Here are our favourites, and how to find them yourself.

Spooky

  • The ghost on Mount Gordo: go to the summit between 23:00 and midnight in-game, and look for a figure hovering over a message in blood.
  • The serial killer trail: strange messages around Blaine County add up to a dark story.

Out of this world

  • The frozen alien: in the prologue, head down the hill to the frozen river under the bridge.
  • The sunken UFO: take a submarine to the sea floor off the northern edge of the map.
  • The Mount Chiliad mural: take the cable car to the top and look inside the tram station. It kept players guessing for years.

Under the sea

  • The giant skeleton: swim to the eastern edge of the map to find huge bones on the seabed.

Nods to other games and films

  • Red Dead: look for a book by J. Marston on the shelf in Franklin's Vinewood Hills house.
  • Halo cosplay: spot two men in green armour on the Walk of Fame.
  • Back to the Future: a sticker on the Sandy Shores satellite tower's circuit box reads 1.21 GW.
  • A familiar spy car: the JB 700 goes on sale after the mission Deep Inside.
  • GTA 4: Lester mentions "some Eastern European guy".

Tips for hunting

  • Use a helicopter to get around quickly.
  • Buy a submersible, or use the one from the Sonar Dock, for anything underwater.
  • Some things only appear at particular times, so sleep to change the clock.
  • Bring a phone camera, and share what you find.

Is Bigfoot real in GTA 5?

Sort of. The Strangers and Freaks mission The Last One involves one, but it's really a man in a suit. It's a nod to years of rumours about Bigfoot in San Andreas.

Did anyone solve the Mount Chiliad mystery?

Not in a way that satisfied everyone. Players have found UFOs and other surprises tied to it, but the mural has never had an official full explanation. That's part of the fun.

Got one we've missed?

There are far more than we can list here, and players are still sharing new finds. That's part of the charm, so explore on your own, too.
