Pokémon Pokopia is getting a Halloween event. Nintendo announced Pumpkaboo's Sweet Surprises! on October 17, and it runs from 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17 to 4:59 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, local time, on Nintendo Switch 2. That gives players a two-week window to scare up pumpkin candy, trade it for midnight-festival furniture and coax two Ghost-type Pokémon into town.

The hook is a neat use of a mechanic Pokopia already has. Rather than adding a new minigame, the event leans on Camouflage, the transformation that lets you disguise yourself as furniture or items that Pokémon like. During the event, Pokémon you startle while disguised hand over pumpkin candy, an event-only item. You spend that candy at the Pokémon Center on themed decorations, and the right combinations become habitats that attract Pumpkaboo and, later, Gourgeist.

What you need before it starts

The event has a few requirements, and Nintendo is specific about them. The game has to be on version 2.0.1, which you can check under Options on the HOME Menu. You also need to have completed a town's important request and rebuilt the Pokémon Center, and to have learned Camouflage from Zorua in Bleak Beach.

Two practical rules are easy to miss. Your console's date and time must match the real world, because the event won't trigger outside its window. And the first session has to be played online. If you only meet the story requirements partway through the event, Nintendo says to move to another town once or choose Save & Quit from the main menu to get it started.

The event also doesn't run everywhere. Nintendo says it doesn't occur on Cloud Islands or in Bubbly Basin. For Link Play, Nintendo's advice is to use Palette Town and speak to Pumpkaboo before starting multiplayer. Spectator Mode isn't supported.

How the candy loop works

Nintendo's announcement covers the shape of the event: befriend Pumpkaboo near the Pokémon Center, collect candy while camouflaged, trade it for event furniture and decorations, then build a habitat and befriend Gourgeist when it arrives. The Pokémon you befriend stay in your town after the event ends, so the rewards outlast the two weeks.

Nintendo Life's same-day guide fills in the shopping list. By its count, the event items cost between one and three candies each, from a Huge Table at one to an Eerie Statue, a Cofagrigus Locker and a Ghost Smoke Projector at three. The guide lists two habitats. Give Me Something Good To Eat combines a table, a Ghost Smoke Projector and a Candy Bucket, and attracts Pumpkaboo. Creepy Pumpkins pairs a Trevenant Streetlight with a Pumpkin Lantern Tower placed on top of a Pumpkin Lantern, and attracts Gourgeist. Nintendo Life puts the total at 11 candies plus any table, or 12 if you buy the Huge Table.

The guide's writer also shares what they saw while playing: one to three candies per scare, and a Pokémon becoming scareable again after about eight minutes. Treat those numbers as one player's observations rather than Nintendo's rules. Nintendo's own announcement doesn't give either figure.

Why a small event matters, and what's next

On paper this is a seasonal decoration drop, and it isn't trying to be more. The structure is more interesting than the theme. Pokopia is a life sim, and life sims live on reasons to come back. A dated, opt-in event with permanent residents as the reward is a familiar way to give players one, and it uses systems players already know instead of a separate mode.

The requirements also tell you who it's for. You need a rebuilt Pokémon Center and Camouflage first, so this is a reward for players already a fair way in, not a free sample for newcomers. A player who started recently has until November 1 to get there.

Nintendo hasn't announced what follows the event, and its announcement doesn't say whether it will return. What's confirmed is the window. If you want Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist as permanent neighbours, the candy has to be collected and spent before 4:59 a.m. on November 1, local time.
