Your Trainer profile is about to get a backdrop. In its latest GO Wild Area post, the Pokémon GO team says that starting with Pokémon GO Wild Area 2026, you and your friends will be able to see your buddy Pokémon's Location Background or Special Background on your Trainer profile. The same post adds private Dynamax lobbies, a pick-a-side Special Research for the global event and a handful of new avatar items.
If you've lost track of the calendar: Pocket Gamer reported in September that the in-person events in Sendai and Mexico City run from 6 to 8 November, and that Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global follows on 14 and 15 November, with Dialga and Palkia making their Dynamax debuts in Max Battles on the Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Backgrounds on your profile
Backgrounds will switch on in stages, starting with these two dates:
- 6 November 2026, 10:00 a.m. local time: the GO Wild Area 2026 Location Backgrounds for Sendai and Mexico City.
- 9 November 2026, 10:00 a.m. local time: the GO Wild Area 2026 Special Background and all previously released Location Backgrounds.
The timing follows each player's own clock: friends won't see your buddy's background until 10:00 a.m. in their local time. The team says more Special Backgrounds will become available to display in the future, without giving dates.
Private Dynamax Battles
Joining a Dynamax Battle now comes with a choice. In the lobby, you can pick Battle to be matched automatically with other players, or Private Group to join an existing group, which asks for a group code. The team says it hopes the change helps friends take on more Dynamax Battles during GO Wild Area and future events.
Steel Scholar or Dragon Defender?
Ticket holders for Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global get a branched Special Research story that starts on Saturday, 14 November 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time. You research either Steel-type or Dragon-type Pokémon, and the post warns that the path you pick decides certain rewards and bonuses. The team's advice is to pick up a global event ticket from the Pokémon GO Web Store and start the story when it becomes available.
Both medals carry the same pair of bonuses, applied to their own type:
- Steel Scholar: 1 extra Candy XL for catching Steel-type mighty Pokémon (Trainers level 31 and up) and 1,000 extra Stardust for catching them.
- Dragon Defender: the same two bonuses for Dragon-type mighty Pokémon.
The bonuses start when you claim the in-game medal and end with Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global on Sunday, 15 November 2026, at 6:00 p.m. local time. Ticket holders at the in-person events in Sendai and Mexico City can collect both type-themed badges in their event Special Research, and keep those bonuses until the global event ends.
New avatar items
- Free GO Pass: Into the Wild: the GO Wild Area 2026 Tee (Purple).
- Paid GO Pass Deluxe: Into the Wild: the Duraludon Pants, unlocked as you progress.
- In-game shop: the Duraludon Helmet, the Gigantamax Duraludon Backpack and the Fighting-Type Jacket, which stay on sale after the event ends.
Both versions of the pass run from Monday, 9 November, at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, 15 November, at 6:00 p.m. local time, and rewards can be claimed until Tuesday, 17 November, at 11:59 p.m. local time. Ticket holders who finish their event Special Research, in person or at the global event, also get a new avatar pose.
Smaller changes worth knowing
- Pokémon HOME: Pokémon caught in GO Safari Balls can now be sent to Pokémon HOME, where the GO Safari Ball shows up as a Strange Ball.
- Adventure Effects in lobbies: starting with the Into the Wild event, select Adventure Effects can be activated from a raid or Max Battle lobby, including Zacian's Behemoth Blade and Zamazenta's Behemoth Bash before a Max Battle. Ticket holders at the Sendai and Mexico City events get early access.
- Event maps and add-ons: maps for both in-person events can be downloaded now, and ticket add-ons, which can boost event bonuses, add extra days of play or preorder merchandise, are active from Friday, 6 November, to Sunday, 8 November 2026.
The team ends with its usual caveat that upcoming events are subject to change.
Riley's take: Private Dynamax lobbies are the quiet winner here. Max Battles are a group sport, and a code-gated room means a friend group can actually fight together instead of hoping matchmaking lumps them in the same lobby. The profile backgrounds are the fun part, though: with every previously released Location Background switching on at once, anyone who has been collecting them finally gets a place to show them off.
