Death in Old School RuneScape just got a lot more serious. Jagex launched Hardcore Worlds on November 4, a permanent mode where every character gets a single life and no respawns, Inven Global reports. Kotaku puts it plainly: "In hardcore, you only get one life."
This piece doesn't rest on Jagex's own news post, so the details below are credited to Kotaku and Inven Global, the two outlets reporting them. Inven Global's report is based on a release sent to it, and on that post.
How it works
Inven Global says Hardcore Worlds run separately from the main game but otherwise work the same way. You can still trade and use the Grand Exchange, and XP gain and drop rates match the main game. The twist is the economy: the mode has its own, so whatever gets bought and sold there stays there.
Kotaku adds that future content and updates apply to hardcore too, so this isn't a side mode left to gather dust. The mode went live on PC, Steam, iOS and Android, per Inven Global, with worlds opening at 11:00 UTC.
Getting in takes a fresh start. Inven Global says you need a brand-new character that hasn't finished Tutorial Island, and you sign up with a new NPC called Death's Delegate, who stands near the Iron Tutor on the island.
What happens when you die
Death doesn't have to end the account's progress. Both outlets describe the same choice. When your character dies, the Reaper appears and offers two options: reset all progress and start over from level 1, or leave Hardcore Worlds and carry on in the main game.
Take the second door and you keep your progress and gear, but Inven Global says anything outside the "Items kept on Death" category is lost. Jagex's framing is suitably cheerful. "The Reaper has been waiting a long time for this, and in a game mode where death is forever, every decision counts!" Kieren Charles, creative director for Old School RuneScape, said in the statement carried by Inven Global. He signed off: "Try not to die."
Kotaku's Rebekah Valentine notes what that does to everyday play: it's suddenly far riskier to wander into high-level areas to chop wood, and the trailer treats cows and low-level goblins as a real concern.
There are prizes too. Inven Global says the Reaper's Raffle and World First rewards started the same day, with players completing tasks set by Death to earn raffle entries. Prizes run from skilling pins and skateboard decks to a Starforge PC bundle and an exclusive Death NPC trophy.
Launch day, and the smuggled gold
The launch wasn't entirely clean. According to Inven Global, Jagex said in an update to its post that someone found a way to leave Tutorial Island as a Hardcore Worlds character before the mode opened, built up wealth on the normal worlds, and carried it in at launch.
Jagex banned the character and its alt accounts about an hour and a half after launch, Inven Global reports. By Jagex's count, around 115.6 million gold entered the new economy this way, and it removed about 103.2 million before it spread. It says it has added safety measures and will keep tracking down the rest.
Why now
Kotaku points out that Old School RuneScape is following World of Warcraft here, which added hardcore servers to Classic in 2023 with a similar setup. It calls those servers a massive hit, and says hardcore is coming to World of Warcraft: Forever sometime after launch.
Riley's take: My favourite detail is that permadeath comes with a polite exit interview. The Reaper asking whether you'd like to start over or quietly transfer to the regular game is a very courteous way to handle mortality. And of course the first big story in a mode about having one life is someone trying to cheat the economy instead of death.
