Minecraft Java Realms tests invite codes and a 25-chunk render limit

Minecraft Java Realms is testing up to five managed invite codes, a 25-chunk render ceiling and separate render and simulation distance controls.

Minecraft is testing new Java Realms controls that give owners easier invitation management and much more room to adjust how far players can see. The features are available in a Java snapshot, which means Mojang is still testing them and may change the details in response to feedback before they become part of a normal release.

The first addition is invite codes. A Realm owner can create and manage up to five codes at the same time, distribute them to other players and optionally give a code an expiration date. Anyone who successfully uses a valid code is added as a member of that Realm.

Invite codes can be revoked without removing members

Owners can delete a code when they no longer want it to accept new players. Mojang notes that deleting the code does not automatically remove people who already joined through it. Existing members stay on the Realm until the owner removes them separately.

That separation is useful for temporary invitations. A host could create a code for a group, set an expiry or delete it afterward, and avoid leaving a permanent invitation link active. At the same time, the people who joined successfully do not suddenly disappear just because the invitation itself is no longer valid.

The second major change is render distance. Mojang has raised the upper limit for Java Realms from 12 chunks to 25 chunks in this test. Owners also get separate sliders for render distance and simulation distance, allowing the visible world range and the distance over which game simulation runs to be tuned independently.

That does not mean every computer should immediately be set to the maximum. Mojang explicitly frames the sliders around preferences and hardware limitations. A longer view can make landscapes easier to read, but performance still matters, especially when several systems are already competing for resources.

Realms also gets a clearer introduction

The snapshot adds an introductory screen when players choose Add Realm. Mojang says the new screen uses pixel art and explains Realms features and benefits before a player commits to setting one up. It is a smaller usability change than invite codes or render distance, but it makes the subscription product easier to understand from inside the game.

Because all of this is in snapshot testing, players need to opt into snapshots through the Minecraft Launcher to try the features. Mojang is actively asking for feedback and says the implementation can change while that testing continues.

For Realm owners, invite codes are probably the most immediately practical improvement. They reduce the need to manage every invitation one person at a time and give hosts a way to limit how long a particular access route remains valid. The higher render ceiling is more about control: players who have the hardware and connection for it can experiment with a much broader visible distance than the previous Realms limit.

The safe takeaway is that Java Realms is testing a more flexible hosting experience, not that every Java Realm has permanently switched to these settings today. Snapshot features are intentionally provisional. If the tests go well, the combination of managed invite codes and independent view/simulation controls should make Realms easier to administer and easier to tune.
