LEGO Super Mario is getting a proper minifigure-led refresh in 2027. Nintendo and the LEGO Group have revealed eight new sets built around familiar characters, karts and locations, with the range scheduled to launch on January 1, 2027.
The important change is not just another batch of Mario bricks. Minifigures are becoming central to the theme. The first LEGO Super Mario line leaned heavily on larger interactive figures and course-building systems, while this refresh is much closer to the character-scale play many LEGO fans expect from other licensed themes. Nintendo says the shift was teased during MAR10 Day earlier in 2026 and is now being shown in detail at Gamescom.
Eight sets, from a pipe jump to Bowser's castle
The announced range starts small with Mario's Pipe Jump, a compact set built around Mario emerging from a pipe and knocking a Goomba aside. From there, the theme expands into Mario Kart sets, beach scenes and larger character-heavy builds.
Mario Kart — Racing with Mario gives Mario a kart with a shell launcher, while Luigi & Bowser Jr.'s Race turns the idea into a two-kart contest. Mario's Beach Adventures moves away from racing and into a relaxed seaside scene, and Mario's House gives Yoshi and Mario a more domestic setting with a garden, bedroom and slide.
The bigger sets are where the new direction becomes especially obvious. Mario Kart — Bowser's Rumbling Race includes several vehicles and characters, while Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle centres on a fortress with lava hazards, enemies and a hidden treasure chest. Fire Luigi vs. Koopa Troopa Battle rounds out the list with a smaller action scene built around launching Fire Luigi at a captured tower.
Nintendo says all eight sets are designed around creative roleplay with the new minifigures rather than replacing Mario's video-game adventures. That distinction matters because this is a LEGO product refresh, not an announcement of a new Mario game or a change to Nintendo's software plans. It also gives builders a more conventional character scale for making their own scenes away from the electronic play pattern of earlier sets.
A different kind of LEGO Super Mario
The partnership between Nintendo and LEGO started its Super Mario building range in 2020, and the earlier products made interactivity the main hook. This 2027 refresh broadens the idea by putting standard minifigure-scale characters at the centre, which should make the sets easier to mix with conventional LEGO collections and easier to understand at a glance.
Nintendo's announcement also points to a wider age spread. Some of the new sets are aimed at younger builders, including two marked for ages four and up, while the larger builds give older fans more display-oriented options. That range suggests LEGO is trying to make Super Mario feel less like one specialised system and more like a full theme with several entry points.
The launch date is the cleanest detail to remember: January 1, 2027. More information is expected before then, but the direction is already clear. LEGO Super Mario is keeping the worlds, characters and kart chaos, while changing the scale of the people inside them.
