Blizzard has put two markers on Hearthstone's calendar: Reign of the Black Empire is due on October 20, 2026, and the Monk class is planned for March 2027.
The expansion is the immediate change. Blizzard's BlizzCon 2026 material places Hearthstone in ancient Azeroth during the height of the Old Gods, with a new Assemble keyword and an updated Journal among the confirmed features. The Monk announcement reaches further ahead: Blizzard describes it as Hearthstone's next playable class and the first new class in six years.
That pairing matters because it gives players both a near-term set release and a much larger structural change to watch after it.
Reign of the Black Empire lands first
Reign of the Black Empire is scheduled for October 20. Blizzard's opening-ceremony recap frames the set around the Old Gods at the height of their influence rather than another small detour in Hearthstone's existing timeline.
The mechanically important confirmed addition is Assemble. Blizzard has not yet given every card interaction a final public explanation in the material Xarmo reviewed, so the useful boundary is simple: Assemble is a new keyword tied to the expansion, but players should wait for the full card reveals and rules text before treating any early examples as a complete picture of the set.
Blizzard is also updating the Journal. That is less flashy than a new class, but it matters to regular players because the Journal is part of how Hearthstone surfaces progression and ongoing goals. The company has positioned both changes as part of the same next phase rather than isolated experiments.
A separate Battlegrounds update, Aberrations, is scheduled for September 22. That arrives before the constructed expansion and means Hearthstone's autumn calendar is already busy even before the October set launches.
Monk is the bigger 2027 change
The Monk class is scheduled for March 2027. Blizzard says it will be the first new playable Hearthstone class in six years, following the Demon Hunter and Death Knight additions that expanded the original class roster.
Blizzard's early description leans on the Warcraft fantasy of a flexible martial artist: adaptable play, physical technique and the identity associated with characters such as Chen Stormstout. That is enough to establish the direction, but not enough to declare a final deck archetype, power level or launch metagame. Those depend on cards and rules Blizzard has not fully published yet.
For players deciding where to spend gold, dust or attention, the timing is the practical takeaway. Reign of the Black Empire is the confirmed October 2026 expansion to evaluate now; Monk is a March 2027 class launch that will require a much broader look once Blizzard reveals its cards and class mechanics.
The two announcements also give Hearthstone something it has often needed between expansion cycles: a clear reason to look beyond the next set. October is about a new Old God-themed card pool. March is about changing the roster of playable classes itself.
Blizzard has confirmed those dates and the broad direction. It has not yet shown enough of Monk's complete card set to support confident claims about how the class will rank, what decks it will replace, or whether it will reshape competitive Hearthstone. Those are questions for the reveals that come next.
