Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has added The Viking Sagas, an expansion built around three new civilisations and a 15-scenario campaign following Harald Hardrada across northern Europe and beyond. Xbox Wire highlighted the release on September 23, while the Age of Empires team published the full expansion details and accompanying game update.
The new civilisations are the Danes, Saxons and Varangians. Each is designed around a different part of the Viking-era conflict rather than treating the period as one interchangeable faction. The Danes lean into raiding and naval pressure, the Saxons focus on fortified defence and infantry, and the Varangians mix cavalry, naval strength and trade-driven gold income.
Harald Hardrada anchors three connected campaigns
The single-player content is structured as three campaigns containing 15 scenarios in total. They follow Harald Hardrada's travels from Scandinavia through Constantinople and toward the invasion of England.
That structure gives the expansion a narrative spine while letting the new civilisations and regional mechanics appear in different settings. World's Edge says the package includes new unique units, technologies and shared Scandinavian architecture, with the wider unit roster also gaining regional additions.
The Danes receive tools built around fast longships and aggressive infantry. Saxon design emphasises resilient settlements and the fyrd tradition, while the Varangians are framed around mobility, mercenary service and commerce across eastern European waterways. The exact balance of those tools will be something players work out over time; the confirmed launch material establishes the intended roles rather than proving which civilisation will be strongest.
The base game gets a wider Viking-themed update
The expansion arrives alongside Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Update 185872. The official patch notes add a Scandinavian architecture set, the Varangian Guard as a regional infantry unit and a Mounted Crossbowman available to 12 existing European civilisations.
World's Edge also lists changes to AI, pathfinding, balance and quality-of-life systems. The patch is therefore relevant even to players who do not buy the expansion: regional units, technical fixes and balance work can alter familiar matches while the paid DLC adds the new factions and campaigns. As always with a long-running competitive RTS, the patch notes describe intended changes; their practical effect will depend on maps, matchups and future balance updates.
The Viking Sagas is available across Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox and PlayStation 5, according to the Age of Empires release page. The Xbox store separately lists September 22 as the DLC release date and confirms that the base Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is required.
The store also confirms six new units across the three civilisations, including shared Varangian Guards, Mounted Crossbowmen and Longships. That gives players new tactical pieces even before considering the civilisation bonuses and technologies that shape each faction's broader identity.
For a game first released in its original form more than two decades ago, the notable part is the scale of the update. The Viking Sagas is not just a cosmetic historical theme. It adds three playable civilisations, a full campaign arc and changes that reach into the broader roster, AI and pathfinding. The next question is how those additions settle into multiplayer balance, but that will require player data and competitive experience rather than launch-day assumptions.
