God of War Laufey delayed three months to May 20, 2027

Santa Monica Studio has moved its PS5 exclusive from February 16 to May 20, 2027, saying it wants time for finishing touches.

*God of War Laufey* won't be arriving in February after all. Santa Monica Studio has pushed the PS5 exclusive back three months, VGC reports, moving it from February 16, 2027 to May 20, 2027. Kotaku reports the same new date and says the news came through the team's social channels.

A quick note on how we got here: the announcement was a post on X, and we couldn't check it directly. Everything below about the delay comes from VGC's and Kotaku's reports, and both outlets print the studio's statement.

What the studio said

The statement is short, and it gives one reason. VGC quotes the studio as saying it has "made the decision to delay" the game to May 20, and that it will "make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential." Kotaku also reports that the extra time is for "finishing touches" and to push the game to its "fullest potential."

The rest is the thank-you you'd expect. According to VGC, the studio says it has been "deeply grateful" for the excitement since the June reveal, and it signs off by appreciating players' patience and promising "more updates soon." VGC describes the stated reason as the studio claiming the game needs additional work.

That is as far as the explanation goes in these reports. Neither one says which part of the game needs the time, and neither says how far along it is. Pre-orders and special editions are already out there, with VGC's related coverage listing a Digital Deluxe Edition and a $150 Collector Box, but neither report says what the delay means for them, so anyone who has already put money down should watch for word from PlayStation or their retailer rather than assume anything. Neither outlet reports any new gameplay detail alongside the date, so treat this as the first word rather than the last.

Why this one gets attention

For players, the practical change is simple: as of today, a game that was a little over three months out is more than six months away.

It is also a bigger swing than a usual sequel. VGC notes this is the first mainline God of War to star someone other than Kratos. Players take the role of Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, who is Kratos's Norse wife and the mother of Atreus, and who dies in the events leading up to 2018's *God of War*. VGC's synopsis has her waking in a strange land after her funeral and fighting through the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, to protect the two of them.

Kotaku adds that the story runs parallel to the 2018 game and *Ragnarök*, with Faye trying to help Kratos and Atreus from beyond. It also says Santa Monica has confirmed a Kratos-led game is in development and will tie directly into the events of *Laufey*. Neither report says the delay changes anything about that next project.

What happens next

May 20, 2027 is the only date on the table. The studio says it will be back with more updates soon, per both reports, but no specific date for that has been given.

Mason's take: Three months is about the most boring delay a big game can get, and I mean that as a compliment. It reads like a team that wants a polish window, though that's my inference, since the studio hasn't said more than "finishing touches." A new lead character is the sort of swing that benefits from a little extra care, and players will forgive a late May far faster than a shaky February.
