Fallout 4 update raises the BA2 archive limit and expands Creations

Fallout 4’s 18 August update quadruples the BA2 archive limit and expands what creators can package for PlayStation and Xbox.

Bethesda has pushed a new Fallout 4 update with several changes aimed directly at larger mod and Creation setups. The 18 August 2026 patch raises the game's BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024, expands what PlayStation Creations can contain, and increases the maximum Creation upload size on Xbox.

For players with heavily modded Fallout 4 installs, the BA2 change is the headline. Bethesda says the higher limit is intended to better accommodate larger collections of mods.

It is a meaningful technical ceiling change, but it should not be read as a promise that any enormous load order will now work without conflicts. The patch notes describe an archive limit increase; they do not claim to remove every other compatibility, performance or mod-management constraint.

What changed for mod collections

BA2 archives are packages Fallout 4 uses to hold game and mod assets. Bethesda's new limit increases the number of those archives the game can accommodate from 256 to 1024.

That follows a separate Creation storage expansion in May. Bethesda increased available console storage for Creations at that point, including up to 15 GB on Xbox One and a growable limit of up to 100 GB on Xbox Series X|S. Raising the archive ceiling now addresses another constraint that can matter as collections grow.

The August patch also includes smaller fixes around the Creations interface. Bethesda says category lists should return ordered results more consistently, and Bethesda.net service errors now include codes that can be supplied to support.

For Steam Deck players, the same update fixes a crash that could occur when opening the virtual keyboard.

PlayStation and Xbox creators get bigger changes

The Creation Kit side of the patch is particularly notable on consoles.

Bethesda says archives are now supported for PlayStation Creations, with additional file types including NIF models, DDS textures, Bink video, WAV audio and FUZ files with embedded WAV audio. Bink files can also be added to Creation uploads through an Extra Files browser.

On Xbox, Creations up to 2 GB can now be uploaded. The Creation Kit also gains localisation export support and changes to its Search and Replace tools, bringing those controls closer to Starfield's version.

Those are creator-facing changes, but they affect players indirectly by widening the kinds and sizes of packaged content that creators can distribute through Bethesda's system.

What the patch does not settle

A bigger archive allowance does not tell you whether two specific mods are compatible, whether a script-heavy setup is stable, or whether a particular third-party tool needs an update after the game executable changes. Those questions still depend on the mods and tools involved.

That is worth keeping separate from Bethesda's confirmed change. The patch raises one documented archive ceiling and expands parts of the Creation Kit; it does not say that Fallout 4 now has an effectively unlimited mod count.

Bethesda has not announced a further Fallout 4 modding milestone alongside the 18 August notes. For now, the practical change is already live: larger BA2-based collections have more headroom, PlayStation creators have access to more asset types, and Xbox creators can package substantially larger Creations than before.
