Battlefield 6's Platoons slip out of 2026 as EA says the feature isn't ready

EA said on October 21 that Platoons would arrive on schedule. On November 5 it said the feature, and the B-81 Cavalry, weren't ready.

Glowing banners ring an empty flagpole on a dark hillside at dusk.

Battlefield 6's Platoons won't arrive this year after all. The clan-style feature was down for December 8, but the Battlefield team said on X on November 5 that it isn't ready, Kotaku reports. The B-81 Cavalry, a vehicle, has been held back with it.

The statement, as Kotaku quotes it, is short: "We have determined that the B-81 Cavalry and our Platoons feature are not ready for deployment as they do not meet our internal quality standards." There's no replacement date. Kotaku says more on a revised roadmap for 2027 will be shared "after the holidays".

A promise with a very short shelf life

The timing is the awkward part, and EA's own paperwork preserves it. The community update of October 21 still says "Platoons will arrive in Season 5 Phase 3 as planned." The same post now carries a note above it, explaining that the article went live before the delay of both the vehicle and the feature was announced, and telling players to watch official channels for updates. Rather a tidy little fossil, that: the promise and its retraction preserved on one page, 15 days apart.

That update also spells out what players were due to get. At launch, EA said, Platoons would hold up to 100 players, with custom group names and squad tags. The feature would have its own tab in the main menu, where players could create or join a Platoon, set up its identity and track its combined gameplay stats. Playing alongside fellow members in a squad would earn an XP bonus. EA called this first release "a foundational step", with more community and social tools to follow based on how people used it.

Earlier in the year, in the announcement Kotaku quotes, EA had also promised different join settings, along with leadership tools for managing membership.

An old idea finding its way back

If the name rings a bell, there's a good reason. This is a Battlefield 3 idea, and the way Kotaku tells it, the original had a humble job description: work as an MMO-style clan, help players form communities, and keep track of one another across groups bigger than a single party. Not glamorous work, perhaps.

Kotaku says some fans had worried Platoons might be gone from the franchise for good, and that EA confirmed the feature for Battlefield 6 in its 2026 roadmap in April. So the comeback has run like this: promised in April, promised again in October, not ready in November. Three chapters, and the ending has been held over for a sequel.

Some fans are not taking this chapter quietly. Kotaku describes the response as ranging from disappointment to disbelief, and quotes a player on the game's subreddit asking: "How did they not know it wasn't ready just a few weeks ago when the new season launched?" EA's statement, as quoted, doesn't answer that, and it doesn't say what fell short of those internal standards.

What's still on the calendar

For everyone else, the rest of the October schedule is the latest published plan. EA's note names only the B-81 and Platoons, and Kotaku doesn't mention any other change.

On that schedule, Season 5 Phase 2 lands on November 10 with a European Casino map, Multiplayer Leaderboards and balance changes. Phase 3 follows on December 8 with the Server Browser and updated versions of the Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City maps. Season 6 is listed only as "2027". If that holds, the Server Browser has December more or less to itself.

The next thing to watch for is that post-holiday roadmap, the likeliest place for a new Platoons date, if EA is ready to give one. Separately, in a Discord Q&A published with the October update and written before the delay, the team said it planned to share details on what comes next "early in the new year", so the two timings broadly line up.
