Xbox Free Play Days ends today with Madden NFL 27 open to every Xbox member

Madden NFL 27 is free to try for every Xbox member through September 13, while most of this weekend's wider Free Play Days lineup requires Game Pass.

Xbox's latest Free Play Days weekend ends on September 13, and the most useful part of the lineup is also the simplest: EA Sports Madden NFL 27 is free to try for every Xbox member during the promotion. Xbox says a Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential membership is not required for Madden's trial window.

That is different from most of the rest of this weekend's Free Play Days slate. Borderlands 4, F1 25 2026 Edition, Surviving Mars: Relaunched and CarX Drift Racing Online are tied to eligible Game Pass memberships, while Dustborn gets a separate two-hour trial. The labels matter if you are deciding what you can actually launch before the weekend expires.

Madden is the exception this weekend

Free Play Days often mixes several access rules under one banner. This time, Xbox explicitly separates Madden NFL 27 from the Game Pass-required group. If you have an Xbox account and compatible hardware, the Madden trial is the broad-access option running from September 10 through September 13.

The other full-game weekend offers require Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential. Dustborn is different again: Xbox describes it as a two-hour trial rather than an unrestricted weekend with the full title.

That means there are effectively three lanes in one promotion: Madden for all Xbox members, selected games for eligible Game Pass members, and Dustborn with a time-limited demo-style trial.

What happens when Free Play Days ends

This is temporary access, not a giveaway. Xbox says players can buy participating games to continue after the event, and progress such as Gamerscore and achievements can carry forward where the game supports it. It also warns that discounts, percentages and availability can vary by title and region.

The practical move is therefore to treat September 13 as the deadline for the promotional access itself. Do not assume a game remains playable because it is still installed, and do not assume a discount shown in another country or storefront will match yours.

For Madden in particular, the weekend is a try-before-you-buy window rather than permanent ownership. The distinction sounds obvious, but "free" promotions are much easier to understand when the access rule is stated up front.

If you only have time for one download

Madden NFL 27 is the standout for anyone without Game Pass because its trial does not require the subscription tiers attached to the other full-game offers. Game Pass members have the wider menu, with Borderlands 4 and the rest of the listed weekend games available under the promotion.

With the clock running out today, the important thing is not the size of the list. It is knowing which door you can actually open: Madden for every Xbox member, the broader lineup for eligible Game Pass subscribers, and a two-hour Dustborn trial.

Free Play Days is best treated as a sampling window rather than a giveaway. If a game clicks, Xbox says progress, achievements and Gamerscore can carry forward after purchase, but access through the promotion itself is temporary and the participating discounts can vary by title and region.
