Wreck Runners is currently running a free Xbox Series X|S Insider playtest through September 9, giving players an early look at features planned for the game's September Update.
The test does not require ownership of Wreck Runners. Xbox says players can bring up to three friends and try an unreleased build featuring Temples, Runner colour customisation, a new underwater enemy, Paranormal Progression, Trustwell Lost Salvage and other changes.
The test is open now, but it is not the finished update
The Xbox playtest began September 4 at 10 a.m. PT and is scheduled to end September 9 at the same time. On Xbox Series X|S, players join through the Xbox Insider Hub and install the separate Wreck Runners Playtest build.
The developer is running a parallel free playtest on Steam with the same core September Update content. The Steam announcement also says ownership is not required and warns that the build is unfinished, so bugs are possible and content can change before the update launches.
That caveat matters. Temples are presented as a new location type to explore and salvage, while Paranormal Progression is meant to add more choices during a run. Trustwell Lost Salvage rewards exploration beyond familiar areas. Those ideas are being tested, not guaranteed in their exact preview form.
The build also adds support for 15 more languages and includes interface improvements, new hazards and other quality-of-life work.
Who should jump in before September 9
If you already play Wreck Runners, the strongest reason to join is to see how the new progression and exploration systems change a normal crew session. A new location is easy to notice; a progression system can alter the pace and decisions across an entire run.
If you do not own the game, the test is a low-risk way to understand its co-op loop before buying. Wreck Runners is built around crews of up to four people operating in the Bermuda Triangle, so bringing friends will give a more representative impression than treating the playtest like a polished solo demo.
The main thing to remember is the deadline. This is a limited test window, not a permanent trial. It closes September 9 at 10 a.m. PT / 17:00 UTC according to Xbox and the developer's Steam announcement.
That gives Xbox Series X|S players a couple of days to join, download the build and play enough to form an opinion. It also gives the developers a larger pool of feedback before the September Update is finalised.
Go in expecting rough edges. The purpose of an Insider playtest is to expose unfinished work to real players before release. If you hit a bug or find something confusing, Xbox's announcement specifically asks participants to use the platform's reporting tools.
For everyone else, the useful news is what the test tells us about the update: more places to explore, more underwater danger, more customisation and a broader progression layer are all currently on the table for September. The exact shipped version can still change after feedback.
