Switch 2 reaches 26.35 million sold as Nintendo holds its forecast

Nintendo's latest figures put Switch 2 at 26.35 million consoles, with a slower quarter, an unchanged forecast and a heavy second half ahead.

Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 26.35 million units worldwide as of September 30, according to Nintendo's sales data. Gematsu reports the figures came with the company's latest earnings release. The quarter was slower than the one before it, and the full-year target hasn't moved.

The quarter

Nintendo's page puts lifetime Switch 2 software at 73.21 million units. The original Switch stands at 157.20 million consoles and 1,593.87 million games.

Gematsu's breakdown of the release says Switch 2 sold 2.67 million consoles and 15.04 million games in the three months to September 30. The older Switch sold another 0.61 million consoles and 31.92 million games in the same stretch, so the first console is still moving more software than its successor.

That 2.67 million is down from the first quarter of the fiscal year, when Nintendo Life reported 3.82 million consoles. The same August report said a price increase in Western markets was due to take effect on September 1.

The games doing the selling

Mario Kart World remains far ahead at 16.48 million copies on Switch 2, Gematsu reports, followed by Donkey Kong Bananza at 5.05 million. Pokémon Legends: Z-A's Switch 2 Edition and Pokémon Pokopia sit level at 4.04 million each.

Further down Gematsu's list are Splatoon Raiders at 2.42 million, Kirby Air Riders at 1.94 million, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave at 1.34 million, the Switch 2 Edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree at 1.28 million and Star Fox at 1.17 million.

The Pokémon Legends: Z-A total needs a footnote. RPG Site says Nintendo's figure across both platforms is 13.31 million copies, and notes that digital Switch 2 Edition purchases count toward the Switch number while physical ones count toward Switch 2. Upgrade Pack sales aren't counted in either, it adds, so the 4.04 million doesn't describe everyone playing that version on the new hardware.

Shacknews reports Rhythm Heaven Groove has sold 2.89 million units since launching on July 2 on Switch and Switch 2. Gematsu also lists Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream at 8.83 million on Switch.

On the older console's all-time list, Gematsu has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 72.00 million and Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 50.63 million.

What the forecast implies

Shacknews reports that strong software couldn't lift Nintendo's total net sales for the half, and that the company left its full-year forecast unchanged.

As of August, Nintendo Life reported, that forecast called for 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles and 60 million Switch 2 games this fiscal year. Add the two quarters above and Nintendo has sold about 6.49 million consoles so far, which by our arithmetic leaves roughly 10 million to go in the six months to March.

Mason's take: Ten million in a half sounds steep, but holiday quarters are where consoles tend to make their year, and I'd wait for that one before reading much into a soft September. My read is that the more telling number is the 31.92 million games sold on the old Switch. Nintendo is running two software businesses at once, and that looks like a useful cushion if the new console's price increases end up slowing things down.
