State of Decay 3 closed beta is coming before the end of 2026

State of Decay 3 is moving toward closed beta tests before the end of 2026 after alpha testing began in April.

State of Decay 3 is moving from internal testing toward a wider closed beta before the end of 2026. Undead Labs says alpha testing began in April and that the next phase will put more players onto the studio's largest map yet as it prepares the game for a 2027 launch.

There is no public beta date in the announcement, and “later this year” should not be read as one. What the studio has confirmed is the testing goal: stress the game's untethered multiplayer, keep tuning systems that only become obvious at scale and gather feedback from a broader pool than the current alpha group.

Untethered multiplayer is a major testing target

Previous State of Decay co-op has asked players to remain relatively close to the host. Undead Labs is now describing State of Decay 3 as untethered multiplayer, which means the studio has to account for players spreading across a much larger space and interacting with the simulation at the same time.

That is exactly the kind of feature that benefits from a closed beta. Four people choosing different directions can create combinations of streaming, enemy simulation, mission state and network behaviour that are difficult to reproduce with a small internal group. The studio says it wants beta feedback on stability and the wider experience rather than treating the test as a promotional demo.

The map itself is also part of the scale-up. Undead Labs calls it the largest map in the series, so navigation, resource distribution and the rhythm between safe areas and dangerous trips all need to hold up when more players are moving independently. The beta should give the team a much better picture of whether that freedom creates interesting survival stories or simply extra friction.

Alpha started in April, but the launch is still 2027

The current development timeline is deliberately broad. Alpha playtests began in April 2026, closed beta tests are planned before the end of the year, and the full release remains scheduled for 2027. PC Gamer's coverage of the game's release window independently matches that 2027 target.

Undead Labs also says it is testing new permadeath systems. Permanent loss has always been central to State of Decay's tension, because a bad decision can cost a survivor rather than merely send the player back to a checkpoint. Any changes to that system affect the emotional and strategic stakes of the whole campaign, so it makes sense that the studio wants broader feedback before launch.

Players interested in testing can use the official State of Decay playtest registration site. The studio notes that people who previously registered for alpha consideration remain in the pool, but registration is not a guarantee of an invitation and there is no announced public start date yet.

The useful update, then, is not “the beta is live.” It is that State of Decay 3 has entered a more concrete testing sequence: alpha in April, a larger closed beta before 2026 ends, then a planned 2027 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5. For a game trying to make its world larger and its multiplayer less restrictive, that testing phase may matter as much as any trailer.
