Xbox Wire says the free period runs from September 17 at 15:00 UTC until September 21 at 17:00 UTC across all supported platforms. During that window, players can install and play Sea of Thieves without a subscription requirement for online access. The timing lines up with Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19 and gives Rare a neat reason to make ship-to-ship communication one of the season's first features.
The Parley Pennant is an invitation, not a shield
The new Parley Pennant is a permanent option in a ship's Flag Box. Raise it and nearby crews are told that your crew is looking to talk. That can lead to an Alliance, some shared challenges or simply a less cannon-first encounter, but Rare is explicit that the pennant does not force anyone else to cooperate.
That limitation is important in Sea of Thieves, where uncertainty between crews is part of the point. The pennant gives players a clearer social signal without changing the rules of the sandbox or creating a protected state. For the Talk Like a Pirate Day event, there is also a short-term reward attached: Rare's September schedule says crews that approach three other ships with the pennant raised before September 22 can unlock the Parley Proficiency Sails.
Season 21 is broader than the flag. Rare's monthly update says the season focuses on a recurring calendar of Live Events and continued improvements to Custom Seas. Outpost shops get new cosmetic ranges, the free Season Pass includes Pirate Emporium rewards with a new level-50 Star Prize, and the Premium Tier adds the Mutiny's Mark collection.
A busy event calendar is the real seasonal structure
The September plan points to a season built around repeatable event beats rather than one giant mechanical overhaul. Rare is lining up activities such as Bilge Rat Weekenders and Fight Nights, while the Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration gives the opening week a social theme. Xbox Wire also highlights new rewards and sweepstakes, though those promotions are secondary to the changes players will actually interact with in-game.
For returning players, the useful distinction is that the Parley Pennant sticks around after the celebration. It is not just a limited-time event item. The special sails are time-limited, but the communication tool itself becomes part of the normal ship equipment.
For new or lapsed players, the free weekend is the low-friction entry point. It starts alongside Season 21 and does not require an Xbox Game Pass subscription, according to Xbox Wire. That removes the usual commitment question for a few days and puts fresh crews into the same shared world as veterans.
Season 21 therefore opens with a fairly simple pitch: more reasons to meet other crews, a clearer way to say "maybe don't shoot yet," and a calendar intended to keep the seas moving after launch week.
