The X20 sits in the ROG Xbox Ally family but should not be mistaken for a new Xbox console generation. It is a Windows handheld built around the Xbox-style full-screen experience and ASUS ROG hardware, with an OLED display and a transforming D-pad among the headline design changes highlighted for this model.
The standalone handheld is $1,299.99
The number most buyers need first is the standalone price. Microsoft and ASUS are asking $1,299.99 in the US for the ROG Xbox Ally X20, with availability scheduled for October 15. That puts it well above mainstream console pricing and into a part of the market where buyers are comparing premium handheld PCs, gaming laptops and compact desktop setups rather than simply choosing between Xbox and PlayStation hardware.
Xbox Wire's announcement focuses on the device's premium positioning and preorder availability. The OLED panel is an obvious part of that pitch because handheld screens are the component players stare at every minute they use the system. The transforming D-pad is another hardware detail aimed at giving the controls more flexibility without turning the device into a completely different form factor.
What the announcement does not provide is a reason to invent benchmark conclusions. A spec sheet can show what hardware is inside a device, but it cannot substitute for measured battery life, sustained performance, thermals or frame-rate testing. Those questions are better left for independent reviews once final retail units can be tested under repeatable conditions.
The $2,499.99 bundle is a different purchase
Tom's Hardware independently reports the same $1,299.99 standalone price and October 15 date, while also detailing a much more expensive $2,499.99 bundle. That package pairs the handheld with ROG Xreal R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a dbrand Killswitch and a Pelican case.
It is worth separating those two prices because the bundle can make the base device look even more expensive than it already is. The handheld itself is the $1,299.99 product; the $2,499.99 option is a larger accessory package built around it.
For buyers, the decision is therefore less about whether the X20 is “the next Xbox” and more about whether its portable Windows format, premium display and control changes justify the price against other PC hardware. Preorders are open now, but performance value is still something reviewers will need to establish rather than something the preorder announcement can prove.
The October date also gives prospective buyers time to wait for measured reviews rather than treating preorder availability as a deadline. Handheld PCs can differ sharply in battery behaviour, fan noise, screen response and sustained performance even when their headline components look strong on paper. Those are exactly the areas where independent testing matters most at this price.
