Miyamoto-produced puzzler Mole Mania leads three Game Boy additions to Nintendo Switch Online on 27 October, alongside Avenging Spirit and HAL's Pinball: Revenge of the 'Gator.

Three more Game Boy games land on Nintendo Switch Online on 27 October: Mole Mania, Avenging Spirit and Pinball: Revenge of the 'Gator. The headline act is Mole Mania, a 1997 puzzler produced by Shigeru Miyamoto that plenty of people missed the first time round.

Good news for your wallet, too. Game Boy titles sit in the standard Switch Online plan, not the pricier Expansion Pack.

The three games

Mole Mania (1997). A puzzle game from Nintendo EAD and PAX Softnica, with Miyamoto as producer, per VGC. You play Muddy Mole, out to rescue his wife Maggie and their seven kids from a farmer called Jinbe. The hook is that every stage has two layers. You push, pull and throw big black balls on the surface, then dig down to slip under walls and pop up somewhere else. Nintendo Life notes there's also a two-player VS Mode where players take turns attacking and defending.

Avenging Spirit (1992). Jaleco's platformer starts with your hero already dead. He's been shot by a crime syndicate, comes back as a ghost and has to rescue his girlfriend across six stages. The trick: you possess enemies and use their abilities. Nintendo's description, quoted by Nintendo Life, says it "features a unique gameplay system where you possess and control other characters!" It's a cult favourite for a reason.

Pinball: Revenge of the 'Gator (1990). A HAL Laboratory pinball game with four main stages, three bonus stages and 1P, 2P and Match Play modes. VGC points out it was the inspiration for HAL's later Kirby's Pinball Land, so it's a neat bit of Kirby prehistory.

What you need to play

All three arrive in the Game Boy – Nintendo Classics app on Switch Online. According to VGC, the base membership covers NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, and it costs US$3.99 a month, US$7.99 for three months or US$19.99 a year (VGC lists UK and euro prices too). The Expansion Pack, at US$49.99 a year, is only needed for the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Mega Drive and GameCube libraries.

Nintendo's own store page for the Game Boy app says it's available "with any Nintendo Switch Online membership" and lists Switch 2 as "Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch," so these play on either console. You also get Nintendo's usual retro helpers: hold ZL + ZR to rewind, and suspend points let you "play, save, and jump back into the action". Handy for Mole Mania's trickier mazes. Nintendo Life adds that Japan gets the same three games in this update.

Why it matters

Fair question: why care about three 30-odd-year-old handheld games? Because this is the cheap tier doing the heavy lifting. Nintendo keeps feeding the base membership with older handheld games, and VGC says this drop takes the combined Game Boy and Game Boy Color line-up on Switch Online to 49 games, with four more only in the Japanese version.

Mole Mania is the pick of the bunch. It's a proper Nintendo puzzle game with Miyamoto's name on it, and from 27 October it's part of a subscription a lot of Switch owners already pay for. Avenging Spirit is the curio: a 1992 game built entirely around body-swapping enemies is still a fun pitch in 2026.

What's next: the games unlock on 27 October. Nintendo hasn't said in either report when the next Game Boy batch is coming, so there's no confirmed follow-up yet.
