Helldivers 2 has pushed its Illuminate war into the Void. After the Devoid of Liberty update arrived on August 12, Arrowhead opened the next phase on August 18: the Gateway is active, squads can cross into the Illuminate Void, and the campaign now includes missions built around exploring and surviving that new frontier.
Arrowhead’s PlayStation Blog update says the Gateway was stabilised on Rirga Bay using research gathered during the earlier Census Thunder campaign. With it open, Helldivers can enter Void planets, document what they find with the tactical video camera, destroy Illuminate structures and take on reconnaissance objectives.
The Void changes the shape of a mission
The update is not just a different skybox. Arrowhead says squads can unlock secondary extraction zones on Void planets, which changes the end of a mission from a single fixed escape point into something that can be prepared while objectives are still underway.
SEAF support squads are also part of the push. Devoid of Liberty expanded the role of Super Earth Armed Forces NPCs, and the Void phase gives those friendly units another place to appear while players deal with the Illuminate’s newer enemy types and environmental pressure.
The August 12 release added the Wretch and Crusher to the Illuminate roster. Arrowhead describes the Wretch as a fast, evasive melee threat and the Crusher as a heavier enemy that can regenerate under pressure. The same update also raised the player level cap to 300, expanded emote slots and changed assisted reloads so teammates can help when either the weapon user or reloader has the correct backpack.
The important distinction is timing. Devoid of Liberty itself launched on August 12. The Gateway opening and the deeper push into the Illuminate Void were detailed on August 18. Treating the whole thing as one instant content drop misses the campaign structure Arrowhead is using to move the galactic war forward.
A good moment for new recruits
The update also arrived alongside Helldivers 2 joining the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members. That does not make the game permanently free, and catalog availability can change, but it lowers the barrier for eligible PlayStation subscribers who have been watching the war from the sidelines.
For existing players, the more interesting part is that Arrowhead is using the live campaign to reveal the Void as a playable space rather than only as lore. The tactical camera, alternate extractions and SEAF support give the new area mechanical hooks instead of relying entirely on atmosphere.
There is still a lot Arrowhead has not explained about the long-term role of the Void. The August 18 post frames the push as the beginning of a counteroffensive and asks players to uncover the source of the anomaly, but it does not provide a fixed date for the next major phase.
So the current state is clear: Devoid of Liberty is live, the Gateway is open, and squads can now fight inside the Illuminate Void. What happens after players push deeper is still part of the unfolding galactic campaign.
