How to install Minecraft Bedrock add-ons and mods
On Bedrock, "mods" are add-ons: packs that add or change mobs, items, blocks and textures. They install with a tap, as long as you turn them on for your world afterwards.
What a Bedrock add-on is
- Behaviour packs change how things work: new mobs, items, rules.
- Resource packs change how things look and sound: textures, models, sounds.
- They come as .mcaddon (often both together), .mcpack (one pack) or .mcworld (a whole world) files.
Where to get them
The in-game Marketplace has free and paid add-ons that work on every device, consoles included. Community add-ons are shared on sites such as CurseForge's Bedrock section and MCPEDL. Check the version they support, read the comments, and watch out for download pages stuffed with ads.
Install on Windows
- Download the .mcaddon or .mcpack file.
- Double-click it. Minecraft opens and shows an import message.
- Create a new world or edit an existing one, then open Behavior Packs or Resource Packs in the world settings.
- Find the pack under Available and select Activate. If the pack asks for them, switch on the matching options under Experiments.
- Play the world.
Install on iPhone, iPad and Android
- Download the file to your device.
- Open it from your downloads or the Files app and choose Minecraft when asked which app to use. Minecraft imports it.
- Turn it on for a world the same way: world settings, then Behavior Packs or Resource Packs, then Activate.
Consoles
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can't import add-on files. On consoles, add-ons come from the Marketplace only.
Before you add packs to a world
- Back it up. In the world's settings, use Copy World and try packs on the copy first.
- Behaviour packs usually turn off achievements for that world.
- If something breaks after an update, the pack probably needs updating for the new version. Remove it from the world until it is.
Java mods versus Bedrock add-ons
Java mods change the game's code and can do more, but only run on Java Edition. If you're on PC, see how to install Java mods. Want the full comparison? Read Java vs Bedrock.
