How to get and change Minecraft skins on Java, Bedrock and mobile

A Minecraft skin is a 64×64 PNG image wrapped around your character. Adding one takes about a minute once you know where the button is.

Where to get a skin

You have two options. Download a ready-made skin, such as any of the free xarmo skins, each a 64×64 PNG with a download button. Or make your own in a skin maker like ours, the xarmo Skin Maker, which builds the PNG for you.

Before you start

  • You need a skin file: a 64×64 PNG. Every xarmo skin has a Download PNG button, or you can make your own.
  • Check the arm size. Classic arms are 4 pixels wide and Slim arms are 3. Choose the matching option when you add the skin, or the arms will look stretched or cut off. Our skin pages tell you which one to pick.

Java Edition (Windows, Mac, Linux)

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
  2. Go to the Skins tab and choose New skin.
  3. Give it a name, choose Classic or Slim, then click Browse and pick your PNG.
  4. Click Save & Use. Your new skin shows up the next time you join a world or server.

How to import skins on Bedrock (Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android)

  1. From the main menu, open Dressing Room.
  2. Switch to Classic Skins and look under Owned for the Import option.
  3. Choose Choose New Skin and pick your PNG file. On a phone, save the file to your device first.
  4. Pick the arm size that matches the skin, Classic or Slim, and confirm.

Consoles

Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can't import a PNG skin. On consoles you dress your character in the Dressing Room with the Character Creator and Marketplace items instead.

Something looks wrong?

  • Arms look wrong or have a gap: you picked the wrong arm size. Add the skin again with Classic or Slim switched.
  • Black or missing patches: the base layer has transparent pixels. Minecraft fills them with black. xarmo skins are always fully filled.
  • Hat or jacket layer missing: check Skin Customization in Options, where each outer layer can be switched on or off.
  • Other players can't see it: some servers, especially offline or cracked ones, don't load custom skins.

Want to wear it for real?

Any skin can be turned into a Halloween box-head costume. The Costume Maker gives you a numbered paint guide for every side of the head.
