Metal Slug Ultimate Collection is bringing 10 versions of SNK's run-and-gun series together, including a rare location-test build of the original Metal Slug that was never officially released as a normal home-console edition.
Xbox Wire announced the collection as part of Metal Slug's 30th anniversary, while Nintendo's current Direct material places the package in a 2027 release window. There is no exact launch date yet, so any more precise date would be speculation.
The headline attraction is not simply another bundle of familiar arcade ROMs. SNK is using the collection to surface an unusual piece of Metal Slug history alongside nine established releases.
Ten games, including the location-test build
The announced lineup spans Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, Metal Slug Advance, Metal Slug 6, Metal Slug 7 and the original Metal Slug location-test version.
A location test is essentially a pre-release arcade build placed in a real venue so developers and operators can observe how players respond. That makes this inclusion different from adding another regional retail release. Xbox Wire says this particular version was never officially released and is appearing on home console for the first time.
For a series built on repeated runs, score chasing and tiny route optimisations, preserving a variant like that can be more interesting than a cosmetic museum extra. Differences between test and retail versions can show what changed before a game reached its familiar form, although players should wait for SNK's documentation before assuming which specific mechanics or stages differ here.
Nintendo's announcement also confirms the package is more than a bare compilation. Features include online multiplayer, leaderboards, a gallery and the return of Combat School. Xbox Wire additionally describes modern convenience options such as quick save and load, rewind, and score- or time-focused challenge modes, with availability varying by title.
The release date is still only 2027
The current confirmed release window is 2027. Nintendo lists Metal Slug Ultimate Collection for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, while Xbox Wire is promoting the Xbox version and SNK has announced additional modern platforms.
What has not been announced is an exact day. That matters because collection announcements often accumulate retailer placeholders long before a publisher commits to a date. A storefront date should not be treated as official unless SNK confirms it.
The collection is already available to wishlist on supported storefronts, which is useful for tracking the eventual launch without guessing.
For long-time Metal Slug players, the appeal is obvious: a large chunk of the series in one package with modern quality-of-life features. For preservation-minded players, the location-test build is the stranger and potentially more valuable inclusion.
