iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Open October 16 for Apple's First Foldable iPhone

iPhone Duo pre-orders opened on 16 October from US$1,999, and US delivery estimates slid to late January within half an hour. Here's what the foldable offers and what it costs you.

Apple's first foldable iPhone went up for pre-order on Friday 16 October at 5 a.m. Pacific, and the queue answered fast. iPhone Duo starts at US$1,999 for 256GB, and by 5:30 a.m., MacRumors later reported, US delivery estimates had already reached 25 January, with new orders no longer able to arrive in 2026.

Apple's own update, posted the day before, set the pre-order time and restated the pitch. Folded, the 5.4-inch outer display offers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max's, and Apple calls it "the thinnest iPhone ever". It runs on A20 Pro with what Apple describes as a dual-battery architecture.

What you actually get for the money

MacRumors lists the range from US$1,999 (256GB) to US$3,199 (2TB), in star white or night sky. If you'd rather spread the cost, Apple's US Upgrade lease starts at US$57.99 a month over 24 months, and trade-ins of an eligible iPhone 13 or later are worth US$175 to US$885 off. Pre-orders run through apple.com and the Apple Store app.

The specs worth knowing before you commit:

  • Screens: 5.4 inches closed and 7.6 inches open, according to TechCrunch, with an under-display camera on the inner screen and a nanotexture finish meant to hide the crease. Apple's hinge uses more than 100 components.
  • Cameras: Apple lists 48MP Fusion Main and Ultra Wide cameras and an "optical-quality" 2x Telephoto option. TechCrunch notes there is no dedicated telephoto lens, which suggests the 2x comes from the main camera's sensor rather than a separate lens.
  • Unlocking: Touch ID only, with no Face ID, TechCrunch reports.
  • Battery: Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer, per TechCrunch.
  • Durability: Apple rates it IP68 for water and dust.

For anyone who plays on their phone, the inner screen is the point. Apple pitches it as a large canvas for content, gaming and multitasking. That is a real step up from a slab phone for games built around touch controls or split views. Apple hasn't named any games or gaming features specific to the Duo, though, so the case rests on screen size alone for now.

The trade-offs nobody puts on the box

Price is the obvious one. At US$1,999 to start, the Duo costs well over what most people pay for a phone, and you are paying first-generation prices for a first-generation hinge. If a fold is going in your pocket every day, check Apple's repair costs and protection options before you check out.

Then there's Siri AI, one of Apple's headline features, which comes with conditions. Apple says it is in beta, English-only to start, not available in China and not initially available in the EU. Anyone outside the US-centric launch picture should check what actually works in their region.

And supply is tight. Apple told the Financial Times, as reported by MacRumors, that demand has been "nothing short of extraordinary". Within minutes of opening, delivery dates slid from 23 October to November, then to late January. MacRumors notes Apple sometimes clears these backlogs early, with no guarantees.

What happens next

Launch day is 23 October. The earliest pre-orders should arrive then, and MacRumors says Apple hasn't said whether stores will have walk-in stock. If you didn't get in during the first few minutes, you're probably looking at 2027. Waiting a little costs you nothing: you get to see how the hinge holds up in other people's hands, before you spend US$2,000 finding out.
