Google adds new study tools across Search and Gemini

Google is expanding study features across Search and Gemini with interactive explanations, quizzes, document-based study help and deeper research tools.

Google is expanding its back-to-school push with a new set of study features across Search and Gemini. The August 19 rollout includes interactive learning experiences in Search, custom practice quizzes, new file-based study material, a student hub in Gemini, and deeper research workflows that can be discussed through Gemini Live.

The useful part is that these tools are not all the same feature wearing different labels. Some are for practising recall, some are for exploring a concept visually, and others are for turning course material into a more structured study session.

Search can build interactive explanations and quizzes

TechCrunch reports that Google Search can generate interactive visuals for subjects such as the pH scale, with follow-up questions in AI Mode able to create a more specific interactive experience. Google is also adding custom practice quizzes directly in Search across subjects including science, maths, humanities and languages.

A Lens learning workflow is due to roll out in the coming weeks. The idea is that a student can photograph a problem, then use Lens to get an explanation of the concept, identify possible mistakes and ask for guidance rather than only receiving a final answer.

Search can also create study documents from uploaded material such as PDFs, slides, documents and handwritten notes. That is potentially more useful than a generic web answer when the immediate goal is to prepare from a specific class's material.

Gemini is getting a clearer student workspace

Google's broader learning work has already introduced study notebooks that build lessons and quizzes around a learner's goal and uploaded material. The new student hub brings learning tools such as notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes into one place inside Gemini.

Google is also adding multi-step research to Gemini Live. A user can ask Gemini to research a topic, let the report run, then discuss the result conversationally after it is ready. Separately, Gemini responses can generate functional visual elements such as 3D simulations for some learning prompts.

The feature set is ambitious, but students should still treat generated material as study assistance rather than an answer key. A convincing quiz question, explanation or 3D model can still contain an error, and class requirements can differ from what a general-purpose tool assumes.

The best use is active study, not answer collection

These tools make the most sense when they create another opportunity to think: test yourself before revealing an answer, ask why an error happened, compare a generated study sheet with the source material, or use an interactive visual to inspect a relationship that was difficult to picture from text.

That also makes the rollout easier to evaluate. The question is not whether Search or Gemini can produce more educational content. It is whether the output helps a student understand the material well enough to explain it independently.

Google is putting more of that workflow directly into products students already use. The practical benefit is convenience; the responsibility is still to verify important material, follow school rules on permitted AI use, and keep the learning task in the student's hands.

Availability will also vary by feature. Some tools are rolling out over the coming weeks rather than appearing everywhere at once, and Google routinely stages Search and Gemini features by language, account type or region. Students should therefore check the product they actually have instead of assuming every announced capability is already visible. That is especially important for schools, where institution-managed accounts can have different policies from personal Google accounts.
