Xbox Mythic Achievements start rolling out to Insiders

Xbox is testing Mythic Achievements with Insiders, adding a permanent completion marker for finishing every achievement in a game's original base list.

Xbox has started testing Mythic Achievements, a new completion marker for players who clear every achievement in a game's original base list.

The feature entered the Xbox Insider programme on September 29. Microsoft says a Mythic is awarded once all of a game's original achievements are complete. Achievements added later through DLC or title updates do not count toward the requirement, and earning a Mythic is permanent even if more achievements are added later.

That distinction matters because it gives Xbox a clearer answer to a problem completionists have had for years: a game can keep growing after launch, but its original completion target no longer has to move with every expansion.

Old completions count too

Mythics are retroactive. Xbox says eligible games completed in the past can already receive the marker, including Xbox 360 titles. That means the system is not only about what players finish after the update rolls out.

The new profile presentation is built around that history. A Gaming tab brings achievements, Gamerscore milestones and completed games together, while Mythic completions get a separate visual frame. Friends' Gaming tabs can also show which games they have taken to Mythic.

For a game that is still in progress, Xbox is adding a progress bar at the top of its achievement list and an option to focus on the original achievements that remain. Later additions are labelled as add-ons so the completion requirement is easier to read.

Gears of War: E-Day shows how it works

Microsoft had already previewed the idea through Gears of War: E-Day. Xbox Wire's September 9 achievement list says completing all 54 of that game's achievements earns a Mythic Achievement.

That example makes the rule concrete: Mythic is not an extra challenge layered on top of a game. It is a platform-level recognition that the original achievement set has been completed.

The comparison with PlayStation's Platinum trophies is obvious, but Xbox's implementation has its own wrinkles. Because Microsoft is applying Mythic status retroactively and separating original achievements from later add-ons, it can recognise older completion history without asking developers to create a new trophy-style reward for each game.

It is still an Insider feature

The important caveat is availability. Microsoft announced Mythic Achievements as an Xbox Insider feature, not as a finished rollout for every Xbox player.

That makes September 29 the beginning of public testing rather than the end of the story. The rules are now clear, the profile and progress interfaces are visible, and older eligible completions can be recognised, but the wider release still depends on Microsoft's rollout beyond the Insider programme.

For players who care about finishing games rather than simply increasing Gamerscore, though, the direction is straightforward: Xbox now has a dedicated way to show that a base game is genuinely complete.

There is another useful boundary in Microsoft's wording: Mythic does not replace Gamerscore. The existing points system still records individual achievements and milestone totals, while Mythic adds a completion status above that layer. For people who compare profiles, that means a high Gamerscore and a large collection of completed base games can now communicate different things instead of being collapsed into one number.
