Valve's September 18 Steam Beta Client update puts most of its attention on how players configure inputs and move around Big Picture Mode. The beta adds keyboard glyphs to Big Picture's footer when a mouse and keyboard are being used, while Steam Input gets new ways to see actions, bindings and multi-button combinations.
The important qualifier is the word beta. Valve says this build is in Steam's Preview/Beta channel, so these changes are being tested before they reach the stable client. Players who stay on the main Steam branch should not expect every item below to be available yet.
Steam Input is getting easier to read
The biggest change is a new configurator view for games that use the Steam Input API. Instead of starting from physical inputs and working toward actions, the new view lists game actions and shows their bindings. That sounds small, but it changes the question the interface answers: rather than asking what a particular button currently does, players can start with an in-game action and see how it is mapped.
Valve has also added a new multi-binding page for authoring button combinations. The page visualizes a timeline of command outputs and their settings, which should make layered or timed input setups easier to understand than a stack of disconnected options. Button-chord bindings can now be inverted as well.
For players who use Steam Input to make unusual controllers work, build accessibility layouts or create game-specific shortcuts, these are practical configuration changes rather than a new controller system. The underlying point is visibility: a complex layout is easier to maintain when the client shows the relationship between actions and bindings clearly.
Big Picture and Remote Play get smaller fixes
Big Picture Mode now shows keyboard glyphs in its footer when the player is navigating with mouse and keyboard. That should reduce the odd moment where a couch-oriented interface keeps presenting controller prompts even after the input method has changed.
The same beta also fixes older unnamed Virtual Menus appearing as "Create Virtual Menu" in some configurator views, fixes Night Mode in the experimental SteamRT3 beta, and addresses EULA acceptance when starting a Remote Stream.
Valve's Steam news search also shows a September 16 beta update immediately before this one, including fixes for a native Linux game-crash regression and brief unwanted interface flicker. Taken together, the two updates are a reminder that the beta channel can move quickly and can contain both new interface experiments and regression repairs.
That is why the September 18 build is useful to watch without overselling it. Steam Input is getting more legible tools for complicated layouts, Big Picture is improving its keyboard-and-mouse cues, and Remote Play gets a targeted fix. None of that requires players on the stable branch to change anything today. If the features survive beta feedback, Valve can then promote them through the normal client update path.
For Steam Deck owners, the update is also notable because Valve groups some of these interface changes under Steam Deck even though the client work can affect Big Picture on other PCs. That overlap is normal for modern Steam: the Deck interface and couch-style desktop interface share a lot of the same client foundation, so beta changes can matter beyond Valve's handheld.
