RuneScape: Dragonwilds leaves Early Access and reaches Xbox Series X|S on September 15, with Game Pass availability and Xbox Play Anywhere support confirmed by Xbox.

The launch is a milestone for the wider RuneScape name. Xbox Wire describes Dragonwilds as the first RuneScape game to release on consoles, bringing Jagex's survival spin-off to a new audience after its PC Early Access period.

Dragonwilds is not a port of the long-running RuneScape MMO. It is a separate survival game built around gathering, crafting, building, combat and co-operative play in the world of Ashenfall.

September 15 is the 1.0 launch

Xbox's September release schedule lists Dragonwilds for September 15 on Xbox Series X|S, with Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere support. Jagex has also framed the date as the game's move to version 1.0 rather than another Early Access milestone.

That matters because Early Access labels can blur what a launch actually means. In this case, September 15 is the point where Dragonwilds is being presented as the full release across its new console audience, not merely a test branch arriving on Xbox.

The core loop remains recognisably survival-focused. Players gather resources, craft equipment, build bases and use RuneScape-inspired skills and magic while exploring Ashenfall. Co-operative play is part of the pitch, but the game can also be approached solo.

Xbox Play Anywhere is another practical detail for people moving between console and PC in Microsoft's ecosystem. The feature is intended to make supported purchases and progress available across Xbox console and Windows PC, although players should verify the live store listing and account requirements before assuming every edition or platform behaves identically.

A different kind of RuneScape expansion

The significance is less about importing the MMO to a controller and more about RuneScape stretching into a different genre. Dragonwilds uses the setting and identity of RuneScape while adopting the structures of modern survival games: resource runs, construction, exploration and group preparation.

That also means existing RuneScape knowledge does not automatically translate into Dragonwilds progression. Familiar creatures, names or lore can provide context, but the moment-to-moment systems are their own thing.

For Game Pass subscribers, September 15 lowers the cost of sampling that difference. Xbox's current material lists the game as a Game Pass release, so eligible members can try the 1.0 build through the service rather than buying first. Subscription tiers and regional availability can change, so the live Xbox store remains the final check on launch day.

The confirmed pieces are straightforward: September 15, Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere and a full 1.0 release. The more interesting question comes after launch: whether a survival game can turn RuneScape's world into something that feels distinct without losing the peculiar identity that has kept the franchise running for 25 years.

Xbox's announcement also highlights the scale of the franchise milestone rather than promising parity with the MMO. That is the right expectation to carry into launch: Dragonwilds is a new branch of RuneScape, not a replacement for RuneScape or Old School RuneScape.
