Chronicles: Medieval studio Raw Power Games says it is at risk of closing after losing its funding

The studio says the money behind it is gone, but it is in talks and "not going down without a fight", PC Gamer and Inven Global report.

Raw Power Games, the studio behind the medieval sandbox game Chronicles: Medieval, says it has lost the funding it needs to keep going and is "at real risk of closing", according to reports from PC Gamer and Inven Global.

Inven Global dates the studio's statement to 30 October. Xarmo couldn't check the original statement directly, so this article relies on the two outlets' reporting and attributes each point to them.

What the studio said

Inven Global reports that the statement was posted on X on both the game's account and the studio's own. PC Gamer says it was also posted to Steam. Both outlets quote Raw Power Games as saying that "due to circumstances outside our control" the necessary funding is no longer in place, and that without it the studio can't keep building Chronicles: Medieval.

According to Inven Global, the statement didn't say where the money had come from or why it was withdrawn. It also didn't say how many people work at the studio or whether any jobs have been cut so far.

The studio pointed to the timing itself. Both outlets quote the line "What makes it hurt is how close we are," followed by the studio saying early access is within reach. Inven Global reports that the statement credits staff "in Copenhagen and remote" with work "often far beyond what anyone asked of them."

Not over yet

This is a warning, not a shutdown. PC Gamer reports that the studio says it is "not going down without a fight". Inven Global says Raw Power Games described "real talks" with "everyone who might help us find a way forward", while stopping short of any promise: "We can't promise you a happy ending." The studio pledged to keep fans updated whether the news is good or bad.

It also asked players for something concrete. Both outlets report that the studio wants people to keep Chronicles: Medieval on their wishlists and keep talking about it, which Inven Global quotes the studio as saying "matters more right now than you might think."

Where the game stood

PC Gamer describes Chronicles: Medieval as an open-world sandbox in development for more than four years, and says it had been due to launch into Steam early access early in 2027. Inven Global, citing the game's Steam page, describes it as a sandbox role-playing game set in Europe during the Hundred Years' War, with players commanding troops in real time while fighting alongside them in battles of hundreds of soldiers.

PC Gamer also notes that the news appears sudden. Through October, the studio had been posting regular development updates, including a detailed look at medieval coats of arms, and none of it suggested a studio in trouble.

Inven Global points out that Raw Power Games isn't the only studio to go public about lost funding recently: Gravity Well, the studio founded by Apex Legends veterans, laid off most of its staff in early October after failing to secure new investment.

Mason's take: The striking part isn't that an ambitious game ran short of money. Plenty do. It's how late in the process this happened, with a game years into development and, by the studio's account, close to early access. Wishlists and community noise won't pay salaries on their own, but they're presumably the kind of evidence a new backer would want to see, which may be why the studio is asking for them. Whether that's enough depends on talks nobody outside the studio can see yet, so the honest answer for now is that Chronicles: Medieval's future is open.
