Before you buy a new mouse or tear up your sensitivity settings, remove the easy variables. A gaming mouse can feel inconsistent because Windows pointer processing, in-game input handling, DPI, polling rate or a flaky wireless path are all changing at once.
The useful goal is not to copy a pro player's number. It is to create one repeatable baseline, test it, and change one thing at a time.
Start with the Windows and game input path
1. Check Enhance pointer precision. In current Windows settings, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and review the pointer options. Microsoft's "Enhance pointer precision" changes how pointer movement is interpreted. For games where you want a consistent physical-to-cursor relationship, test with it disabled and compare. Do not assume the switch affects every game identically: titles that use raw mouse input can bypass parts of the Windows pointer path.
2. Prefer raw input when the game explicitly offers it. A raw-input option is useful because it lets the game read mouse movement more directly instead of inheriting desktop pointer behaviour. The important qualifier is "when offered." Do not follow a random registry tweak or third-party utility to force a setting that the game does not support.
3. Pick one DPI and stop touching it during the test. DPI and in-game sensitivity combine to determine how far your view moves for a given hand movement. There is no universal best DPI. PC Gamer's mouse guidance makes the same broader point: useful sensitivity is about the relationship between mouse DPI, game sensitivity and the space you have to aim. Write down your current values before changing them so you can roll back.
Check polling before chasing bigger numbers
4. Test the polling rate for stability, not bragging rights. Polling rate describes how often the mouse reports its position to the computer. Higher rates can reduce the interval between reports, but the practical benefit gets smaller as the number rises and very high rates can add CPU or USB workload.
Start at a common stable setting supported by your mouse, play the same repeatable section, and watch for frame-time spikes or input oddities. If a lower rate feels identical and behaves more consistently on your system, there is no prize for keeping the larger number.
This is particularly worth checking on older CPUs, busy USB setups or games that react badly to very high report rates. A polling change should solve a measured problem, not become another variable you adjust every match.
Rule out the physical connection
5. Give a wireless receiver a clean test. If you are seeing skips or intermittent input, first charge the mouse, then try another direct USB port or a manufacturer-supplied extension that places the receiver closer to the mouse. Retest before changing DPI or sensitivity. The point is diagnosis: if the problem disappears when the connection path changes, your aim settings were never the cause.
For a wired mouse, inspect the cable path and connector, then test another known-good port. Avoid changing drivers, firmware, sensitivity and USB placement in the same pass because you will not know which change mattered.
Once the mouse is stable, leave the desktop settings alone for a few sessions and adjust only the in-game sensitivity if needed. Keep a note of your DPI, polling rate and game value. A boring, reproducible baseline is more useful than a "perfect" setting you cannot reproduce after the next reinstall.
