Virtual reality can produce spectacular images, but the moments that stick are often much simpler: hearing a sound move behind your head, reaching toward an object and having the controller respond, or looking across a space and feeling its scale. Those effects point to a useful distinction. Visual fidelity helps VR, but presence comes from several sensory and interaction systems agreeing about where you are and what your body is doing.
PlayStation's own PS VR2 material makes that case almost explicitly. Sony combines a roughly 110-degree field of view with head-tracked 3D audio, eye tracking, headset vibration and Sense controllers that support haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, precision tracking and finger-touch detection. None of those features alone guarantees a great game. Together, they give developers more ways to make an action feel anchored to the virtual space.
Presence is built from consistent cues
Scale is the first trick VR gets almost for free. A large object can feel large because you have to move your head to take it in rather than seeing it framed inside a television. Audio reinforces that spatial reading. Sony says PS VR2's 3D audio adapts to the player's position and head movement, so footsteps or a voice can have a location rather than simply a stereo balance.
Hands matter for the same reason. Tracked controllers let a game respond to the direction and position of an action, while haptics can add a physical cue when something makes contact. PS VR2 also uses headset feedback, which Sony describes through effects such as the sensation of an arrow passing or a vehicle accelerating. The editorial point is not that stronger vibration equals more immersion. It is that a small, well-timed response can support what the eyes and ears already believe is happening.
That is why a quiet interaction can be more convincing than a huge explosion. Picking up an object, opening a door or leaning around a corner asks several systems to agree at once. When tracking, sound, animation and feedback line up, the brain gets fewer reminders that it is translating controller input into a flat-screen action.
More immersion also means more constraints
Presence has practical limits. Sony supports seated, standing and room-scale play depending on the game, and room-scale titles can require a clear area of at least two metres by two metres. That makes physical space part of game compatibility in a way it rarely is on a television.
Hardware support matters too. Sony's documentation for using PS VR2 on PC notes that several PS5 features are not available there, including HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking and the Sense controllers' adaptive triggers and advanced haptics. The same headset can therefore deliver a different sensory package depending on where it is used.
Comfort is equally personal. Smooth locomotion, turning methods, session length and movement intensity affect people differently, so a design that feels wonderfully embodied to one player may be unpleasant to another. Good VR design needs options and restraint, not a demand that every sensory channel be pushed to maximum.
The best VR moments, then, are not necessarily the loudest or most technically elaborate. They are the ones where scale, sound, hand interaction and physical feedback point in the same direction while the game respects the player's space and comfort. Spectacle can get attention. Presence is what makes a simple action feel like it happened somewhere.
