The Witcher 3's cross-progression is a cloud-save bridge, not a system that merges every local save from every platform. Once the feature is enabled through a CD PROJEKT RED account, the game can upload recent saves so they can appear in the Load Game menu on another supported platform signed into the same account.
The feature arrived with the 4.0 next-generation update, and CD PROJEKT RED described cross-progression as one of that update's major additions. At launch, the setup used the same account-linking idea across supported platforms: connect the game, upload a save to the cloud and sign into the linked account on the other device.
How a save moves from one platform to another
On a supported version of *The Witcher 3*, open the Load Game menu and use the Cross Progression option shown on screen. The game will prompt you to connect to a CD PROJEKT RED account. Once connected, cross-progression is enabled by default, although it can also be switched on or off under Gameplay options.
Create a new save after the account is connected. A cloud icon beside that save indicates it has been uploaded. On the second platform, connect *The Witcher 3* to the same CD PROJEKT RED account, then open Load Game. The uploaded save should appear there for you to continue.
PC Gamer's original guide to the 4.0 feature described the same account-linking flow and noted that the system works across PC and consoles rather than only between devices in one console family. CD PROJEKT RED's own 2022 materials likewise identified cross-progression as a headline next-generation feature.
What actually carries over
The important unit is the save file. Cross-progression does not turn platform purchases into a universal licence, and it does not mean every installation automatically mirrors an entire local save archive. The practical habit is to create a fresh save on the platform you are leaving and confirm that it has reached the cloud before switching devices, rather than assuming an older local save has already followed you.
Cross-progression is therefore best thought of as continuity for your playthrough, not a promise that every platform installation is identical. PC Gamer's launch guide described transfers from console to PC, PC to console and between consoles, but the destination still needs a supported version of the game and access to the content used by that save.
A safer routine before changing devices
Update both installations first. Connect both to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. On the source platform, make a new manual save and check for the cloud icon. Only then move to the destination platform and look for that save in Load Game.
If it does not appear, avoid overwriting the source save while troubleshooting. Recheck the account connection and game version before creating a chain of new saves. The system is designed to make switching platforms straightforward, but a visible uploaded save is the clearest confirmation that the hand-off has actually happened.
