Apex Legends cross-progression explained: what follows your EA Account

Apex Legends cross-progression follows the EA Account that owns the profile; unlinking a platform does not transfer that progress to another EA Account.

Beau Kennedy

Apex Legends cross-progression is automatic, but it is not account transfer magic. Your progression is tied to an EA Account, and supported platform accounts need to be linked to that same EA Account for you to access the shared profile.

EA currently lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported cross-progression platforms. If you move between those platforms while using accounts linked to the same EA Account, the core Apex profile, progression and most cosmetics follow that EA identity.

The important warning comes before any unlinking: changing which EA Account a platform is attached to does not move the Apex profile with it.

Your EA Account is the anchor

EA says Apex progression is permanently tied to the EA Account that holds it. A player can have one Apex Legends profile per EA Account, rather than separate independent Apex profiles that can later be freely merged.

That is why checking account links matters before changing anything. In EA's Account Portal, you can see which PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or other platform identities are connected to the EA Account. If the platform account you normally use is linked to the EA Account that owns your Apex progression, cross-progression can surface that profile on supported devices.

Cross-progression itself was introduced in 2023. Players who had multiple platform profiles linked to one EA Account during the original rollout went through a one-time merge process. EA says that merge is not something players can run again whenever they link another account.

If your progress lives across two different EA Accounts, linking and unlinking platform accounts will not combine those histories. EA's current help documentation says Apex progression cannot be moved from one EA Account to another.

Most progress follows you, but some content can stay platform-specific

EA describes cross-progression as sharing account progress and cosmetics, but it also warns that certain content is exclusive to a platform. That can mean an item or currency does not appear identically on every device even when the main profile is shared.

That is a useful distinction if the totals look different after changing platforms. A missing platform-specific entitlement is not automatically proof that the entire cross-progression system has failed.

EA also documents older edge cases from the original merge. Players who had lower-level platform profiles merged into the primary profile could lose some duplicate or conflicting content, and accounts that were not linked during the one-time merge were not folded in later.

For a returning player, the main thing to check is much simpler: confirm the EA Account that owns the progress, then confirm the platform account is linked to it.

Unlinking is the risky part

EA's warning here is blunt. If you unlink a platform account from the EA Account that holds your Apex progress, you lose access to that progress and content on the unlinked setup. Relinking the platform to the original EA Account can restore access, but linking it to a different EA Account does not bring the old Apex profile across.

That can also produce problems with Battle Pass levelling, unlocks and purchased content while the wrong account relationship is in place.

So if the goal is merely to play Apex on another supported platform, do not start by unlinking accounts. First check the Account Portal, identify which EA Account actually owns the progression, and link the new platform to that account if the platform and account rules allow it.

Cross-progression is best understood as one Apex profile following one EA Account across supported platforms. Keep that anchor intact and the system is fairly predictable. Break the link first and it becomes much easier to end up staring at the wrong profile.
